Re: Vikings on the History Channel
Do you have a link to the series so I may read about it online? Though I do not doubt the wife is very beautiful, I am extremely interested in Viking history and it's not often I hear of something on the history channel that actually relates to history anymore. Sadly I don't have cable, so I would have to look it up on Netflix, youtube, etc...but I'd like to know exactly what I'm looking for. I only ask because Vikings have been featured before. I believe, most notably, during Barbarians Week.

Re: Vikings on the History Channel
Here is the official site: http://www.history.com/shows/vikingsYou can see episodes 2,3, and 4 in their entirely. The American Spectator featured an article trashing the series out for inaccuracies. But honestly, while they may be correct about certain things, this is a fictional TV show, not a scholarly thesis. The ambiance is better than most other movies shows. Anyone who knows a bit about Viking history will take it into account. If they don't know enough, my feeling they should read a book instead of relying on a TV series!

Ah, so it's a tv series drama, not a documentary. That's a disappointment.

Re: Vikings on the History Channel
The set is actually pretty good. Clothing is a bit deficient, but the overall effect is quite good. It is worlds above some of the gawd-awful documentaries I have seen, with their cheesy reenactors and melodramatic narrators. I bought one of the "Barbarians" documentaries a few years ago and it was so awful I donated it to my Library's booksale. In the History Channel drama, Ragnar uses a sun stone for navigation. Some scholars have insisted that there is no evidence for anything like this, but they are mentioned in inventories of several churches and one monastery in medieval Iceland. Then just this year, an Iceland spar sunstone was recovered from the Elizabethan ship Alderney.
I do like how Lagertha is portrayed as a shieldmaiden who is very capable of combat, but they don't gaudy her up or sensationalize her. It also depicts the Vikings as being more than mindless killing machines like we popularly see. A friend of mine from Iceland, who is heavily into her Viking ancestry, enjoys the series. I don't watch many dramas, but to me it's a refreshing change from the usual fare on the History Channel with those dumb "reality" shows. It's also worlds above stuff like "The Tudors".

Re: Vikings on the History Channel
I actually love the cheesy reenactments and melodramatic narrators. I wish I had known you when you had the Barbarians series, I likely would have bought it from you! It's one of my favorites by the History Channel. I also loved their documentary on the French Revolution, though they did not incorporate nearly enough information into it as I would have liked, but with the time constraints they put on it, I suppose I understand. I may see the series, but I'm not sure.
I am not exactly disappointed in a series drama about Vikings, but in the fact that such a show is from the History Channel. It's changed a lot from when I use to watch it. I understand they also have a drama series called The Bible...
The History Channel has deviated from history and turned into a another reality show/ please the masses channel with a *cough*historical*cough* twist to it. It's a shame really. I miss the days when it was truly about History, specifically ancient history.
LS- It says the webpage is not available. Maybe it's just my computer....

Fun fact! I was going to be in this but my phone sucks so I didn't get the 5AM call asking me to be several hours drive away by 9AM until about three days later. A lot of my friends were actually in it though.

Re: Vikings on the History Channel
You probably wouldn't have noticed me. They did open casting for extras and I guess I fit the mould of the viking they were looking for. I do have the right hair and beard I guess...
