Re: take the....Religious Knowledge Quiz!
I know a few bars which still follow fish-friday rules, and won't serve any other meat that day.
I was aware of this, too. My house-mate, on the other hand, also was raised Catholic, and was absolutely surprised to learn that there were still Catholics who cut meat on Fridays outside the span of Lent. His mother attended a far more liberal RC church.
P.S. @FiB, D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths was one of my childhood treasures! And also Edith Hamilton's Mythology.
Oh yes! I managed to find a Second Edition of The Greek Way
when I lived in Ann Arbor from the local curbside book-vendor who sets up at a street corner near the university; all paperbacks $3, all hardbacks $5, and he gets a lot of really nice stuff coming through frequently (if you're ever in Ann Arbor, MI).
I was actually really impressed, as an adult, how closely the D'Aulaire re-vision of the creation myth follows Hesiod's Theogony
--to a point, of course (the man loved his genealogies, not matter how little it added). Children's lit doesn't have to be dumbed-down at all.
