Post Re: How did you start dressing goth?
I will first go through my fashion experiments as a little kid till now. When I was a little kid I did not very much mind anything I wore, but I did adore wearing wristbands. Later on when I was 7 years old, I recall very much liking the long arm warmers. When I was 12 years old, I got my first choker, lace gloves, zipper gloves...Then when I was 13 years old, I was actually more into wearing monochrome clothing which consisted of vests and also skinny jeans. I am cutting the story quite short missing many more details because its almost impossible for me to remember my fashion history in such a short time. During the year when I turned 14, I had officially dedicated myself to clothing of crimson reds, blacks, dark blues, and other colors I thought to be sophisticated for my own look. Of course, I did not see myself as goth then. And I spoke of my clothing style to those who asked as a combination of my own individual style. When I turned 15, I so much admired the goth style but did not find one style to my own liking. So I tried as many as I possibly could and others were harder to try because the clothing variety in common clothing stores did not have it. So I tried thrift stores and any store that I could possibly find. Till now I do not have the most developed closet of my goth love but the progress towards achieving what I feel is my heart is far from over. Lace gloves, lace chokers, mini top hats, black leather long skirts, black boots, and school girl heels...I am waiting for the day when I can get my tall platform boots! People tell me that I am dressed to go party which is true except for I don't party much~ I say dress to impress, achieve, and spread confidence. This sounded like a journey.

I wish I appreciated fashion as you did when I was young. My dress style as a kid was $hitt. I wore stuff as a kid which now days I would consider trashy. Me wearing black with dark blues and suits with sneakers. In some cases I even wore two different types of socks! I wore shirts that were too small for me.(What was I thinking.)

It does sound like you have a great victorian style going for you. Where do you dress in your style if not at parties? How do others view your fashion?

Well one day, after my year long research on the goth fashion and culture it self, while enjoying the music and writing of it much, much longer... I decided it's enough pretending to fit in the socially accepted standard of clothing, and let the world see me how I truly am. I took the money I saved during that year, found my way in to the local goth store (well local, but it's the only one in the country :/), left them a considerable amount of money and walked out with 5 black bags of black clothes. Then as the night came I burned all my old clothes with the help of 5l of gasoline, well with the exception of my band shirts, but they're black and from Nightwish, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil and two Theatres des Vampires (one signed 8) ). Since then I have been all the goth that I can be :D

I don't want to call it a tranformation because that's sounds super lame, however mine wasn't as particularly dramatic as yours, though my fashion did spike in the last couple of months... to everyone's disapproval of course. Yes, those were the months I started ordering clothing online.

I must ask what your style is like and when you wear it.

Well it didn't came as much of a surprise to my friends and family because I was talking about doing it for quite the time. The burning wasn't for the drama but simply to make my transition back, for which were no need or want so far, as hard as possible :D. My style, hmm I just get whatever I want and like, but going trough my closet I would say victorian/romantic depending on the occasion but looking in to my bookshelf and what introduced me to the culture I'm a vampire

I actually go everywhere in that type of clothing style. Except when I am at home. At home, I don't care what I wear at all. When I go out of the house though, I like to express myself in my clothing. My friends and my teachers actually compliment me daily on my clothing, although they don't always like the dark colors I wear sometimes. My family could be a little more supportive but I start to mind less more what my family thinks of me because my own opinion matters to me the most and also the people i care about. Plus, they aren't the most fashion-oriented people. Also, church is where I tend to tone down alot of my goth clothing not just because people that I love and people that I don't know dislike it but because my love of God far exceeds my willingness to wear my own style.

I always dressed punk (Goth being an offshoot) the transversal wasn't drastic. I was really into skate punk style, so converse chucks, black pants, black band tees, etc. I didnt change much from then to now for everyday clothes. Now I normally wear black docs, skinny jeans or bdu pants, studded belts and the like and a band Tee. Sometimes I'll wear a nice dress shirt, always keeping to dark colors like black, red and purple. I always spike or back comb my hair. I rarely wear makeup, only a bit of eyeliner and maybe some whitener every so often when I'm going to a concert or something.

I spent the better part of my teens dressing in black. I just recently started getting back in black (no pun intended), and maybe in the future, I'll start getting a little more flamboyant attire especially since I've wanted to do that for so long. I am in the same boat as Auraneity that I choose to dress simple for church because that's not the place where I want my apparel to be the center of attention.

I am a pretty big person, and I really need and want to lose some weight, and should that happen, I would like to procure some steampunk attire.

So what is your casual outfit like since you burned all your common clothes?

I don't understand what it is about parents not liking goth style. For a long time I never imagined my parents caring prior to dressing goth. When I actually started wearing eyeliner my dad started telling me eyeliner is for "faggots." My mom doesn't like the style at all. She just thinks it's weird and inappropriate and my dad keeps relating it to homosexuals, even though it has nothing to do with them.

I knew some goths who went to church in their chains, fishnet arm warmers and black. The priest would always address the Church about how people weren't dressing appropriately during his announcements. I even once wore a hat during mass and they complained about it. They are uptight as crap.

I quit going to Church, really wasn't my crowd at all. The way I look at it, goths should be allowed to go to Church in their goth clothing.

I know it's a contraversial subject in this forum but I love the emo style. I think it's very fashionable. I personally wear skinny 7.5 low rise jeans. The guys at my work dispise skinny jeans, saying guys are going to look at your butt if you wear them. I think it's hilarious, I'm like, guys, if you think guys in skinny jeans is weird, you should see the rest of my crazy stuff.

But yes, you sound very fashionable.

I'm borderline anaorexic athletic. Terms mean eating and working it all off through exercise obsessively. I'm very fit and thin, though I'm a little underweight. I'm 5'7 between medium and small frame and I weigh 140. I eat around 2500 to 3k calories a day yet I work tons of it off through biking everynight.

What type of flamboyant steampunk dress styles did you have in mind?

Well during these burning hot days it consists of a band t-shirt, very light pants and shoes, all black ofc :D. But when the weather is colder I wear a nice shirt (usually from the Romantic or Victorian era) covered with a leather trench coat (though it's more of an optional extra then a must when I'm outside) and pants tucked in my beautiful knee high boots. I like to keep it simple and with as few layers possible.

That's a difficult question.

I would say around middle school, I started wearing more black. I always loved goth style clothing, but I was a late-ish bloomer. I always felt most comfortable near the somber-garbed. Even now, I haven't quite embraced wearing the style...I always feel an imposter next to all you lovelies. Most of my clothing now is black, or red, or purple and I have several batty/halloween-themed items. There's definately a lot more lace in the recent years. It was a strange journey to this point. I grew up a tomboy, and preferred skinny legs and hiking boots to anything in the world. Around the 5th grade or so, I branched out into 70's-80's. Bellbottoms, bright colors and peasant tops, silver and turquoise jewelry. I guess it would be approximately akin to a hard switch from punk to goth?

I don't mind it either. For about a month I tried that floppy emo hair, but it really didn't feel right deep inside. I have some emo friends because the goth scene is virtually nonexistent where I live (or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough), but I have yet to meet another goth, not even a mallgoth, in my city. Anyways, I digress. I find some emos to be a tad feminine. The music can be described as in audible high pitched shrieking, and a lot of the dudes like to wear women's super skinny jeans too. The worst part is when people mistake me (or goths in general) for an emo.

My styles are generally pretty conforming and I don't mean it in the sense of fitting in with others. My clothing is never loose, I always make sure my stuff fits against me well. I've thought about boots, however I enjoy mobility and running around. I try to avoid adding any kind of bulk onto my look. Although I appear very layered, my silhouette is rather thin.

I love when the weather gets cold. I receive an extra layer of customization that I may add to my look. I wish I lived around you people, no one out here gives a damn about style or fashion. All we have is indecent people walking about in public without a fraction of self respect. I take very much pride in my motivation to take care of myself and dress nice.

Sometimes I forget that I dress goth. I think it's easy to tell when someone is going for the style, regardless of them throwing money at their look.

My colors are black and red tartan and that's it. Of course I have all my silvery and sometimes gold details. Some goths don't believe in wearing gold but I believe it fits in quite nicely. Now, brown and dark blues are definite nos.

My only other style is formal. Simply button shirts, dress shoes and ties.

See, I could never do emo hair. My hair is just way too curly, as you can see in my picture. I personally enjoy the emo music. I listen to some MetroStation and Death Cab for Cutie. I must also say, emo girls are quite attractive if the girl wearing the style is attractive.

Well I think we're thinking of 2 different genres. Death cab is more an indie band, where I've always thought of emo as more along the lines of Alesana, Escape the fate, Pierce the veil (the singer sounds like one of those choir boys who had their nuts removed to make their pitch higher). Maybe that's all screamo, but I don't know. My issue with emos is they mainly generate their own problems to feel sorry for themselves when there's nothing wrong with their lives that an average human being couldnt handle without being all melodramatic and slicing their wrists.

I have some friends like that who would make perfect emos. Now, regardless of the drama, I'd ay emos have great style.
