Post Article: Steampunking a Goth wardrobe
It has been said, in slight jest, that Steampunk is what happened when goths discovered brown. :D

Anyway, this is a fun style article regarding steaming up your gothy wardrobe. And since I know several of us here have, well, discovered brown and also because i adore Cherie Priest who brings us this fashion article hosted by Tor.Com, I'm sharing it with you here.

She does have a point, black and brown can go really good together... provided its properly balanced. I have more stuff in dark brown then I have in shades of gray or red.

I thought when goth met brown, eco-goth happened.

At least that happens in my wardrobe. :D

I've worn black on brown (or is it brown on black?) and it turned out good looking. Though, most of my brown clothing are casual, so I guess I don't have a good-to-go steampunk wardrobe.

I actually had some steampunk wardrobe ideas on my sewing list, though, none of the stuff I pictured were going to be brown or earth tone colors. I was gonna go with red velvet, ivory white, and pinstripes.

Ah ha, THAT's the secret...steampunk isn't really brown; those sepia-toned pictures just misled everyone. :D

Glad you enjoyed. And, while you're having fun dressing up the Clockwork Couture steampunk doll, you can see that she has a few black items in her wardrobe (although the black items are shaded with grey and chocolate), as suggested in the article by Cherie Priest. Mostly her wardrobe's color scheme consists of shades of brown, grey, bronze, and deep Thulian pink.

My envy of her clothing and accessories is exceeded only by my envy of the ease and speed with which she gets dressed.

I'm probably going to bug a few Steampunk purists here but... *gets ready to duck*

I hate brown and gold (brass). On me, I mean. It looks terrible with my skintone - it's not that I'm stuck in a rut of silver & black (OK, well, I sort of am!), but I have found it exceedingly difficult to find items that are both steam- and goth-friendly. Most of the time I have to do a little DIY with a black garment to make it work, but I'm cool with that because I mean hey, it makes it unique right?! :D

I suppose I'm just looking for anyone else who feels the same so I don't feel quite so alien about it. I'm sure there must be at least a few...

I have to agree to an extent; that is, I think steampunk looks pretty cool on other people, but whenever I try to pull it off I end up going more cyber and less steam (and less punk and more goth). For instance the goggles: Cool, classy, completely non-functional, but I figure why not go with a bit of neon or spikes? That, I suppose is my downfall. To me, steampunk is semi-modern but WAY too old fashioned (yet not so old fashioned that it looks regal).

On that note, I've just realized I've said absolutely nothing of relavance. Oh well, I guess it just isn't my cup of tea. That's all.

Oh, yeah, I avoid brass/gold tones on my body. Thulian pink looks pretty good on me though. ;)

I think it's too early in the development of the genre/subculture to really have purists in a true sense. And those who consider themselves "purists", IMO, are full of it for that reason.

There's definitely a lot of people interested in the fashions that don't put anything brown or brass in their outfits, as you can see from some of the posts here: http://community.livejournal.com/steamfashion/

Now my husband, he won't dress up. Not at all. But he LOVES the aesthetic and is interested in building Steampunk sculptures, drawing airships with conte, all that jazz. Because, let's remember that before it was a fashion movement, it was a literary genre that started to translate into art and such. :)
