Post gothic facial makeup/skin tone
So, i was wondering about the typic (but yes, cliche) paste white skin tone you seem to see alot of goths and emos using, in more detail, just what is it? where can i find it, or, what can i use to create a solution, and, what are your views on males wearing it

thanks
~Eric

There are few people who can pull off white face...the only white face I know of is Manic Panic's Virgin Dream Tone or Goth White. I imagine MAC makes a really pale foundation. Since I can never find pale enough foundation anyway, but I don't do white face, I mix the Virgin Dream Tone with the palest foundation I can buy from the makeup section (right now I"m using Neutragena Classic Ivory and translucent pale powder by somebody, but I heard another brand now makes my favorite translucent pale into a foundation, not just a powder. But on to your subject, most of those little Emos are probably using the Manic Panic. That, or they just avoid the sun...

Definitely, if they're white, it's most likely Manic Panic's White Face products, or a very light foundation (which Manic Panic also sells, HERE). As LaughingCrow said, not many folks can pull it off. And also, it is NO GOOD for everyday wear, it'd just look obnoxious, IMHO.

I'm naturally very pale, and I also struggle to find make-up light enough for my skin. Though, surprisingly, my cousin's mineral make-up line has a cover-up/foundation/whatevertheheckyawannacallit thats light enough for my skin. I used to use the lightest spot concealer I could find, or foundation (depending on how my skin was behaving), and then put translucent over it to lighten it up, and it'd still be a bit too dark.

After seeing this thread, I have to ask...

Has anyone seen these products in stores? If so, where?

I've seen them in shops in Philadelphia, on South Street.

You're probably going to have trouble finding them in physical stores unless you're in/near a city center.

Ahhhhh...!

I'm on Long Island, so unless I journey well into Manhattan, I probably won't be able to find it. : /
Darn it. It would go perfect with my new blouse too.

You can buy Manic Panic at Hot Topic, and before the baby bats freak out---it's OK to shop there. Just don't buy an outfit off the rack and expect to not be mocked. /end tangent.

As for the pale foundations--check Wal-Mart.

Well I'm Canadian as well. As far as finding Manic Panic products, if you can't obtain a credit card to order from Hot Topic (Or Manic Panic)'s Online Stores, you may be able to find their products in small independent shops. Not sure what Barrie has, but as far as shops around here, if you want something and they deal with a shop that carries it, they'll usually gladly order it in for you.

Well.. I wear white face make up almost every day (apart from when its 27+).. when I say "white face" I mean Manic Panic's Virgin White pressed powder which isn't as bold as the liquid foundation, even then, because my skin tone is naturally light it just kind of blends in while making me more corpsy looking. I guess I see where your coming from, but still.. obnoxious? Then again, I am the only Goth within a nice 200 km radius of anywhere, even if I do live in the major city of Sydney, everyone else is hiding away in their coffins.. so I like to flaunt it when I can.. ooh fine, obnoxious ;)

Back on topic, you asked if guys can wear pale face makeup, sure thang, as long as you try it and it suits you, you feel comfortable in it, go for it. I honestly recommend Manic Panic powder, it's more subtle and that way easier to tell if your over-doing it or not, that is if you find a retailer near you.

Intentionally obnoxious...? :P

I also got some rather interesting Manic Panic Dye Hard hair gel, which will whiten your hair and make it UV reactive, likely from the same store (not too many stock the stuff). I'm just proud to have local knowledge.

Not really. Die Machine is in Sydney, and is still running. So you're bound to have at least a few black-clad brethren kicking about. Just in case you seriously WERE complaining about not having any sort of scene to hang out in, and not exhagerating how barren Australia can honestly be. Heh.

Anyhow! The topic on hand. What do I think about men wearing white-face? I think it's a bad idea. It usually looks like crap. Blunt, but my opinion. The results are often clown-like, basically, which isn't an attractive look at all. You have to understand that, even in this culture, a little make-up goes a LONG way. Most of us cannot pull off white-face, or panda eyes, or any of that. And isn't the point of getting all done up to look good and feel good?

I think you'll be far happier with the results of working with your natural skin-tone, rather than with stereotypes. Some of the best looking goths I ever saw were tanned dark; sure, they didn't look dead. But they did look sexy. And I tend to prefer paler skinned folk, if that helps things along.

Still, if you've got to do it, you could try lead powder. Sure, it'll drive you nuts then kill you, but your face will be sheet white. Other than that, I'd say go with a good pale powder. Liquids, particularly when applied to the whole face, can be a bit heavy and will lead to more trapped oil and breakouts and the like. I can't really say that Manic Panic is the BEST brand of concealer out there, but if you're after pure white, it may be the best you can get. Shopping at a costume shop will only lead to disappointment.

Fair warning; don't be surprised if wearing white face gets you snobbed a bit extra. Expect the norm from most people, but there's a reasonable population in the scene that will probably assume you're a Spooky Kid and not a Baby Bat, and avoid you.

Hi

You can find white stage make-up at good theatrical / dance shops or online. They also sell setting powder etc.

Channel make a white pre-base lightening foundation which is lovely on it's own.

MAC do make white powder and foundation but is only available form the Pro site- you need to phone your order though.

I prefer a naturally healthy alabaster look- more akin to Pre-Raphelites or Snow White so i use MAC white foundation blended with MAC NW15 foundation (for pink undertones)- they also have NC 15 for yellow undertones. I use MAC white or rose pink loose powder to set it. (they have a very light yellow powder for yellow tones to)

I dislike obvious white face foundation - for both men and women - plus men need to be really carefull about mixing foundation/ powder with facial hair- a tip is to blend the edges of the foundation/ hairline with moisturiser.

Hope that helps

Oh a little bit o' both. The scene seems to be dying around here sadly enough :( and although I know we have Die Maschine on at the second Saturday of every month, the lack of Goths you see wandering around public in general is a little disheartening. I do however plan to go to Brisbane's Zombie Walk this year.. should be smashing :D.

ArcAngel, muahaha, of course :D .

hey, thanks for the replies, everyone, i just hope i didnt cause too much of a turmoil, lol.
now, i hope im not annoying anyone by posing another question, i noticed that 'Productofashatteredyouth' mentioned a hair whitener, i was curious where i might find some stuff like that, hopefully in the general vicinity of either Barrie, or Missisauga(a sub div. of Toronto) both places, of course, are in Ontario, Canada.
and on the note of good stores, what are some good all around (hopefully fair priced) stores, again, in Mississauga, or Barrie
now, i can likely stretch to Brampton as well (Toronto), and much of Innisville (near Barrie)
as well

Thanks
~Eric
