 York
Some - if not most - of you will be familiar with my recent thread on the subject of Whitby. Maybe its age; maybe I'm just not keeping my ear to the ground as well thesedays. However, ironically enough, the day I was in Whitby, a relatively few miles away - in York - this was happening: DV8 three-day goth festival...Now, this is actually an interesting and important development, an item of newsworthiness. Clearly, someone has seen the potential for a festival to help shorten the wait between WGWs. To be fair, judging by the list of performers at the event, the Whitby weekend has made the thought of performing at a festival in an out-of-the-way location a viable proposition. So, what does York have to offer the potential festival-goer? Your humble intrepid roving reporter has been on her travels again, to bring you the skinny on a location worthy of our attention... In coming posts. York, I have to confess, is one of my favourite places to visit, and it's relatively easy to get to - because of its historical importance in the railway network, you can get there from almost anywhere in mainland Britain. So, I'll be putting together another one of my little travelogues...

 Re: York
Oooh, thanks for covering my back, Gareth! I noticed a flyer for this (one solitary flyer) in an appropriate location, of which more later. If I'd been more aware of it earlier, this would not only have been a "must", it would have been a "must" I would have made damned sure (if you'll forgive the Puck-baiter, which was unintentional) I attended.

 Re: York
I love York, but I mostly go there for the National Railway Museum.... and Betty's!!! Ahh, I love chocolate and have been nibbling on Minstrels this evening. (And not one of them put up any resistance! ) Next time I go to York, however, I want to check out the Merchant Adventurer's Hall. I walked past it and thought it looked fascinating.

 Re: York
Oh, I love Betty's! Elsewhere I've been extolling the virtues of their Fat Rascals... And, the National Railway Museum is one of my favourite places in the entire world! My long-suffering partner took a number of photos of a particular, new, exhibit, and I'll be posting some of those at some point in this thread! Alas, I can't help with the Merchant Adventurer's Hall, though; I've never been there... But this actually highlights an issue I wanted to bring up about York. For a small town, it may well have the second most things to do per square mile in the UK, after London. Not into railways? Then how about visiting York Minster, the massive Norman cathedral? Or taking a walk along the old walls of the city? Or strolling through the gardens of York Castle Museum? The place has an enormous sense of history. And, rightly so; it's been a settlement of some kind or other since Roman times - indeed, in the crypt of York Minster, there's a display of recovered Roman artefacts, and evidence that indeed the Minster itself was built on the site of a Roman structure. And, despite its pre-eminence as a town – it was once England’s “Second City” – it has had an extremely conservative approach to development; even as late as the 1930s, no new build was allowed within the city walls – York has a beautiful, if rather less exuberant than usual, Odeon cinema, built in the streamlined style of the 1930s; it’s situated just outside the city walls. Changes to this policy were unfortunately necessitated by the infamous 1942 “Baedekker” raids, so-called because the Luftwaffe used a guide book to the cathedral cities of England as the criterion for making large-scale bombing raids on English cultural centres, including York. So, there’s plenty to feed the mind, and with them, the eyes. Because the city centre is rich in all kinds of architecture dating as far back as the 16th Century (let alone the churches, many of which are even older), it has a really amazing feel; I know, from experience, that walking around the deserted streets in the early morning, the best possible soundtrack you could possibly have to complement the experience would be “Dead Lover’s Sarabande Face One”…

 Re: York
I'm going to try and get up for at least one day. A lot depends on whether they do single day tickets. As to pics... THAT depends on Michelle. If she wants to go, there'll be a camera in tow, for sure - given that it's York! -- Thu Mar 10, 2011 7:57 pm -- Here's the Facebook page for DV8.
