Oscar Wilde - Birthday Hails

Postby Nephele » Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:52 pm

Yesterday (November 30th), marked the 111th birthday of Oscar Wilde, who is buried in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

The Parisians this week unveiled a new look for Wilde's grave (funded by the Irish):

"Paris Cleans Lipstick off Oscar Wilde Grave"

Reuters WroteColonFor over a decade, Oscar Wilde fans have flocked to a famous Paris cemetery with lipstick in hand and left red and pink kiss marks all over the Irish writer's cream-colored grave.

But from this week onwards, with Wednesday marking the 111th anniversary of the Dublin playwright's death, Wilde enthusiasts will have to contend with paying their tributes through a glass screen at arm's length from the tomb.

The new-look grave was unveiled after a renovation that left it scrubbed clean and surrounded by a glass enclosure to preclude future visitors from degrading the stone.

Full article and video here.

And here is a picture of Wilde's tombstone, with the controversial angel genitalia (as mentioned in the article linked above).

Since we can no longer kiss Oscar Wilde's monument (heheh), I invite everyone here to pay tribute to him by posting one of your favorite Oscar Wilde quotes.

Ledge and Wolfie, those were good quotes!

Here's one of my favorite Oscar Wilde quotes – I think Wilde speaks directly to the heart of alternative culture, with this one:

Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself.
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891

... but who wants to live without passion?

I read Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray when I was 17 or so, and it still is a major influence on my personal philosophy and world view.
I find myself giving the following to the non-smokers sometimes:
"Cigarettes are the perfect form of entertainment; cheap, short and unfullfilling."
~ Oscar Wilde.

Basil, I can't allow you to smoke cigars. You must have a cigarette. A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want? (from The Picture of Dorian Gray)

Brilliant novel, and one of my own favorites.

Great quotes, everyone!

That's certainly a more accessible, um... monument, to put one's mouth upon.

I am a huge fan of Oscar Wilde, you can tour the house (first on the left) he grew up in, during the summer here (but only as part of a large pre-booked group).
I'm glad they are protecting his grave, I've always felt it a crime that he isn't celebrated more, here in Ireland.
Other countries are very proud of their famous artists, and many have museums dedicated to each one.
I was just in Amsterdam were both Van Gogh and Rembrandt both have their own museums, Wilde deserves nothing less.

Though perhaps the man himself, would not want that :
"Biography lends to death a new terror."
