Texas doesn't want critical thinking skills
"Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority." from hereI'm a bit surprised they'd put it that way.

Re: Texas doesn't want critical thinking skills
I hate to think that all Texans think this way. This is coming from the Republican Party of Texas, and their political platform shouldn't really surprise anyone. Including this excerpt from it: Quote: Homosexuality ― We affirm that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit. Homosexual behavior is contrary to the fundamental, unchanging truths that have been ordained by God, recognized by our country’s founders, and shared by the majority of Texans. Is that sentiment really "shared by the majority of Texans"? Mayhaps the Republican Party of Texas is presuming much. Oh, almost forgot... Fuck the Republican Party of Texas up the arse with a Texas longhorn. Yee haw. -- Nephele

Oops. My mistake, I meant to mention that it was the Texas Republican Party.

Re: Texas doesn't want critical thinking skills
I must say I feel this is a prime example of how certain groups want to keep people ignorant in any way possible in order to control and manipulate them. If people are not being taught critical thinking skills- then how can they question the government with any level of intellectual evaluation and research if their not even taught how to think for themselves and the essentials on how to do it?
I think the Texas Republican party is taking their little agenda too far. When are people going to wake up and realize that ideas like this are harmful- not helpful, no matter the political affiliation. Hindering rather than helping. Promoting hate and bigotry instead of equality and tolerance.
They want to say this is a 'Christian Nation" (and I'm not even getting started on that debate!) and their values are ingrained into our government, yet they refuse to preach the way of love as Jesus taught it within the parties they represent. I'm not bashing anyone, but simply making a correlation as I find it to be on a general observance.
I also cannot trust anything that disapproves of higher learning, while in the same instance bashes homosexuality. We all no how harmful it is to not be able to tap into our own intelligence because we never reach our full potential that way (which is probably what the Texas Republican Party fears). If we know how ridiculous it is to not allow higher education- then I'd also take everything else they said with a grain of salt, including homosexuality.
I certainly hope this hasn't and will not go into law.

Re: Texas doesn't want critical thinking skills
The Republican Party of Texas is now saying that they made a mistake. Quote: Contacted by TPM on Thursday, Republican Party of Texas (RPT) Communications Director Chris Elam said the “critical thinking skills” language made it into the platform by mistake.
“[The chairman of the Education Subcommittee] indicated that it was an oversight of the committee, that the plank should not have included ‘critical thinking skills’ after ‘values clarification,’” Elam said. “And it was not the intent of the subcommittee to present a plank that would have indicated that the RPT in any way opposed the development of critical thinking skills.”
Elam said the members of the subcommittee “regret” the oversight, but because the mistake was part of the platform approved by the convention, “it cannot be corrected until the next state convention in 2014.” Read full article here."Mistake" or not, it looks like a vote for the Republican Party in Texas is a vote for stupidity. -- Nephele

Yes, that. I'm not necessarily anti-Republican, but sheesh.

No, it's a vote for liars. There's no way that explaination is true.

People got angry so they had to pretend it was a mistake. Do I think it was a mistake? Hell no. The only mistake they probably think they made was being obvious enough to get caught.

Re: Texas doesn't want critical thinking skills
I also think that it wasn't a mistake. Because I've seen something like that here. There was a party (or a project or whatever) called "Alternativa Portugal" and one of the things they said was that that party/program/whatever was composed by men and women that don't accept the renegation of our christian roots and also said that our (young people) concerns are their concerns (yeah righ and I’m the Easter Bunny), and also said that they want to educate young people according to ethic and moral values that they have lost because of primary urban subcultures from other countries (and because of other things too). They talk about liberty, but liberty in doing what they want us to do and not in doing what we want to do (is this liberty?). In another words they are a conservative project that appears to came from Salazar’s head.
