Obviously though, what I consider beautiful, you may not. I would add "angel" by massive attack. Joni Mitchell "Urge for Going" Cowboy Junkies "Misguided Angel" (I am in LOVE with this song, its the landscape of my soul - never mind the gender specifics) -LS

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yes? I am not religious, but I've always liked Mozart's Requiem, although I'm a bigger fan a Beethoven for the emotion behind his pieces. Toccatta and Fugue in D minor ~ BachI love organ music.

I would have to say the most beautiful music I listen to would have to be from bands like Lycia, the Shroud and of course Dark Sanctuary!

I'd have to add Sopor Aeternus, Her music has lots of dark and beautiful intruments in it.

Re: What is the most beautiful music you listen to?
Thi is a difficult question, because I feel ALL of the music I listen to is beautful, even when it is ugly!
However, for conventional definitions, I listen to loads of neofolk, medieval, darkwave(of the neoclassical and medieval folk variety), dark ambient, ambient, mittelalter, martial industrial, neue deutsche todeskunst, classical music, and traditional folk music.
There's some uncannily breathtaking music coming out of all of these scenes.
Probably out of all of them Sopor Aeternus' tragic brand of todeskunst probably still moves me the most, so I'll go with her, but Dead Can Dance, EARLY Lacrimosa, Die Propheten-era Das Ich, Dead Can Dance, Dark Sanctuary, and Rosa Crvx all make second place.
Recently, Bloody Woods(new neofolk unit from China), and Dense Vision Shrine(dark ambient from Norway) have both made my list of tear-jerkers as well.
Older tear-jerkers would also include Clan of Xymox' Medusa and Rozz Williams/Gitane Demone's Dream Home Heartache, as well as lots of Deine Lakaien's stuff

The Maurice Durufle Requiem is my favourite, honestly. (French Impressionist composer) If you can find it (it's usually packaged with the Faure), it's gorgeous. Oh and Wolfmammy, Durufle was an organist, so you'll like him. I tend to listen to a lot of orchestral film scores, as I find them particularly moving. Also Indian classical, and Gregorian chanting.

Thank you, Luna! I will be looking that up. Yes, organ music is one of my weaknesses....shhhh.....

Re: What is the most beautiful music you listen to?
Wolfmammy, have ever heard Brahms 'Requiem'? I have CDs of both his and Mozarts and Brahms is by far my favorite. Dare I say it's even Gothic in its sensibilities and overall tone?
As for most beautiful music I listen to, I have to agree with Centurion in that everything I now listen to is beautiful, even if it isn't by more conventional standards of that notion. But I do think that ethereal 'shoegazer' type music has that sort of intense beauty to it that almost anyone can agree on. Autumn's Grey Solace springs to mind with their evocative atmospherics. AGS has that sort of ' gazing into the distant sunset' sort of mood to much of their work that gives the sense of the music being dark in a starkly beautiful way.

Re: What is the most beautiful music you listen to?
A good batch of classical pieces but these come to mind right now: Saint-Saens Third Symphony - the second movement. I find it tremendously moving - especially the part with just the strings and organ. If they are absolutely together it gives me chills... More Saint-Saens organ music: the Prelude and Fugue in E flat Major Op. 99, No. 3. THAT's what I'd want for wedding ceremony music (if I ever manage to have one...)
Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor
Brahms Sonata for Viola and Piano in E flat Major. At the time I was studying music, I wished I could play it but my hands were/are too small for a viola.
Brahms First Symphony
Brahms is one of my favorite composers - my dad felt the same way.
Bruch "Scottish Fantasy" ONLY Heifetz' version. I've heard some other violinists play it and it didn't sound lively enough.
Bach Unaccompanied Sonatas and Partitas - I like them whether played by violin, cello, or guitar.
Schumann Piano Quintet in E flat Major - years ago when I played violin, I was lucky to be in a group playing this. One of the best of times!
Shostakovich Piano Trio in E minor
Schubert Piano Sonata in A major D.959 (D = Deutsche's catalogue of Schubert's works)
Bartok - two pieces: Concerto for Orchestra Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta
I'm not the biggest fan of opera but I love Boris Godunov (Mussorgsky). Also the score, written by Sergei Prokofiev, to the movie "Alexander Nevsky"
Introduction and Allegro for Strings and String Quartet by Sir Edward Elgar
I know this is a long list and I've probably forgotten some others...
