Ok, ok, I know Kerrang's reviews can't always be trusted (they described Korn's 'Love Song' a 'goth metal anthem'), but I thought some FoTN fans would be interested in the review of their latest album, 'Mourning Sun'...

The Horsemen of the goth apocalypse ride again

Until their split in 1991, Fields of the Nephilim were the last word in roughshod, weatherbeaten gothic rock, with singer Carl McCoy as the ultimate trenchcoat-clad master of ceremonies.

Fifteen years on, and this first new full-length proper shows little change to the formula. 'Mourning Sun' creaks and groans under a familiar shroud of doom-laden portents and dirty guitars.

Whether it's enough to claim themselves a new fanbase after such an absence remains to be seen, but there's enough amongst the grimy grooves to raise more than a nostalgic smile from old followers.

Download: (i.e: best songs) 'New Gold Dawn', 'Mourning Sun'
For Fans Of: Killing Joke, Clan of Xymox

I confess I haven't heard any of the new stuff, and don't have the album yet, but does this review sound accurate to those of you that have?

EDIT - Silly me, I forgot the most important part - it got 3/5

Meh, you`re right. Kerrang reviews can`t be trusted. Everything I`ve read from them sounds as if some shallow-minded mainstreamer who would otherwise listen to pop music listened to the cd once and came up with some quick blurb describing their first impressions.
I could tell when I read their review of Penis Flytrap where they described them as the "Cradle of Filth of punk".

That said, I`m sad to say I haven`t got the cd yet, but am waiting in anticipation. That review doesn`t really tell me a whole lot, so I`m still left in the dark as of what to expect.

I want to buy this album, but it's really expensive in American dollars (24!)
I have developed a nose for certain preferences in reviewers. So, if it seems one is dissing an album or film for being too dark, atmospheric (and not scary), gritty, heavy metallic, etcetera and it is obvious they don't like and/or don't understand those sorts of things in general...I go for it like a cat for sardines.

I have noticed that the forums on www.fields-of-the-nephilim.com have been down for ages. Writing to the e-mail address listed under their contacts link brings no response. Are there any good Nephs fan sites out there? I have searched via engines, but come up dry.

Its a great album for sure, although not quite as awesome as their older albums from the late 80s and early 90s respectivly. I can't stand Kerrang magazine anyway and would definitly not trust any of their reviews.
