He actually has a slew of desktop samplers. Dr. Rhythyms and such. The way he beats on them, it's surprising that they still function :)

As for his laptop, I didn't see wht he was using on it.

I abuse Ableton Live myself quite frequently ;)

Based on what I've heard...

Techno is mostly composed of electronic beats, etc. Industrial has more metal in it...like a combination of techno and metal...but heavier and with more actual singing...

wow...it is kind of hard to explain isn't it...???

As there are many genres/subgenres of Techno so too there are many subgenres of industrial (which does include EBM and there is the main crossover). As has been posted earlier, industrial started in the seventies - Throbbing Gristle are the outfit usually credited with starting this genre which they named "industrial" music to distinguish from the more "agricultural" music that they defined as being current. They started as an "avant-garde" (I hate that term but there you go) art-performance based outfit in reaction to punk. They believed that punk didn't go far enough in its rebellion against rock because it still relied heavily on a rock structure (guitars etc). Funny that we should now have a genre known as Industrial Rock (Ministry, NIN, Mariliyn Manson [to a degree], Rammstein etc). Industrial now has subgenres ranging from the early experiments of Throbbing Gristle through to bands like Einsturzende Neubeuten, Di Krupps etc (using power tools, making industrial instruments etc) to more noise based acts like NON and Boyd Rice through to death ambient/industrial bands like Brighter Death Now, Grey Wolves (links with dark ambient) and power electronics like Slogun, Genocide Organ/Anenzephalia. Then there is industrial Rock (above mentioned bands as examples) and EBM (Front 242, Noise Unit, Haujobb, [and Skinny Puppy probably somewhere in between Indust. Rock and EBM]). These last two sub-genres are probably the more well known faces of Industrial. Techno was originally intended as dance music and is often (not always) computer generated with the drumbeat designed to replicate the heart beat. However there has been so much development in both styles over the years so there are some Techno styles (Industrial hardcore, Breakcore, Drum 'n' noise, fukstep etc) which are noisier and more industrial than some EBM/Industrial rock which can be more user friendly and often more danceable. Then there is ambient techno which is more for relaxation, psy-trance which is intended to encourage the psychedelic experience etc. So much history there - it's worthwhile looking up both terms in Wikipedia which has a good history/definition of both. Mine is probably a bit rambly.

Apparently not. I think the debate has in fact worn a hole through itself though.

Thread Closed.
