As of today it will no longer be possible for people to direct/hot-link forum or main site images from here to anywhere else.

For the uninitiated, direct-linking or hot-linking is when someone puts an image up on a site, but rather than storing the image on their own webspace, they just put the webaddress of it's original home instead, meaning that it's still loading up from the original site and costing the original site owner bandwidth usage.

So say Joe Schmoe has a website at http://www.mysite.com/~joeschmoe/ and he's decided he likes a specific image from this site, rather than save the image into his own mysite.com webspace, he's just put in a <img src="www.goth.net/ImageHe'sRippingOffFromGothNet.jpg"> tag, so now our image loads up on HIS site from OUR webspace, on OUR bandwidth, on OUR dime. Not fun.

After getting exceedingly fed up with people direct/hot-linking to images from my personal site all over the web (1000+ hits from xanga.com for April alone), I finally disabled it, and we've implemented this same change on GOTH.NET, as I came across a user who liked some of our avatar images and just plastered them onto her site, without saving them.

So, you can't directlink to any of our forum avatars anymore, nor to any of the GOTH.NET system images.

This does NOT affect GOTH.NET webspace users who are hosting their own avatars/pictures on their personal sites for miscellaneous use. If anyone has any issues with this not being the case, let us know, but it should only affect the main GOTH.NET site and Forums system images.

Yeah.

I found a site that would write me a custom script if I filled in certain bits of information, which URL's were exempt from blocking and where to redirect to if necessary (hello direct-linkers, welcome to This Image loading on your site instead of mine (yes, it's a .txt extension, to get around geocities no-direct-linking image policy)). This way it also stops loading a 'no direct-linking' image off my own server and just redirects those hits to geocities.

PreZ helped me modify it, so I could also exempt specific files and such, which is handy.

Just a little while earlier, I was browsing the forums like I usually do, but out of nowhere came all of these "No Direct Linking" images. I am hoping that this a test of some sorts.

Either way, it scared the bajeezus out of me, ???.

Nice pic for the bandwidth thieves there Lilith. Personally I wouldn't have shown as much restraint; I'd have gone for the somethingawful.com method instead. ;)

If I eventually want to start up something like a webdesign business, I don't think I'd make a good impression with profanity or stuff like tubgirl to deter direct-linkers, do you?

Plus blinky stuff is quite irritating in and of itself.

I don't supposed you could mention more specifically where you came across this?

Curious as I am, I went to see the pic. Nice: if you can't educate them, blind them.

Main section or a thread? and more importantly, is it still doing it?

Well, I try to educate them, it's mentioned on my sites several times (it happens most with fanlisting codes) and I've put html comments around the image codes saying not to do it, but that's easily avoided if people just right click and do 'save image location', and they still do it.

And something that's very blinky and epilepsy inducing is generally noticeable and annoying, and something they'll change quickly enough.

It was in the main section, but it is not doing it any longer.

It was not happening on the other forums when I checked, by the way.

It was all over my inbox and log-in email page. I didn't particularly mind, though- aside from passer-by thinking staring, of course. ;) It's all in testing.

Oh yes- congratulations, you all are quite far ahead most webmasters.

Well, it shouldn't be doing it anymore.

/div WroteColonOh yes- congratulations, you all are quite far ahead most webmasters.

Well, this is something someone else passed onto me, and it's also been an issue that bothers many site owners, especially fansite owners.

Users don't realise the kind of strain it puts on the people who run the site, because their bandwidth increases quite substantially. This in turn can mean increased running costs, as many people have limited bandwidth and have to pay for excess usage, plus it also means that some of the bandwidth the site has is being used to run little bits of other people's sites, rather than being used for the main site itself. Kind of like taking out some of the gas in your car and putting it in someone elses tank... your dime but nothing of yours runs on it.

Just blocking this doesn't make me ahead of anything else, I found a site that told me what to do, and PreZ helped me with the rest.
