I like both, but industrial is better.

A more difficult question: What's the difference between EBM and IDM, and between industrial and powernoise, and between hardcore industry, techno and industrial...

if you venture a little into the avantgarde ravescene, you will soon discover that the music they play there is very similar to industrial and EBM, however they discard the visual style of the genre...

I think I might actually compile a website of definitions of the subgenres involved in the industrial scene...

finish our website first viv :P

I`d say techno and industrial are as different as light and day.....

I always thought of techno as being non-vocal, drum machine based dance club music, while industrial is more based on the harsh electronic experimentation, etc.

Anyways, I have diverse tastes and will just as easily thrown on a Future Sound of London cd after a Skinny Puppy one.

Industrial has more life to it, more... feeling. Techno is rather hollow. Industrial is maybe more rock based, where techno has nothing at all like that. I like some techno, but I mostly go with EBM and industrial.

Actually I enjoy ambient trance/techno/trip hop/whatever the fuck it`s called..... as long as there`s somewhat of an ambient atmospheric influence, I can like it.

Just a mere happy dance beat, some samples and blips is trash....

Techno is a form of dance music, played by DJs such as Carl Cox, and is characterised by a thumping kick drum and ambient samples. Tempo is around 120bpm. Not to be confused with trance, which is around 140bpm, has much more percussion and is much more aggressive.

Industrial can range from the avant-garde beats and noise of Annexia, to the harsh, raucous sound of industrial metal, such as Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails. It is generally characterised by the use of filtered drums and synth sounds, to give a cold, robotic feel. Tempo can range from 1bpm to 300bpm.

If you want to see what industrial music looks like, watch the video 'Linchpin' by Fear Factory. I would class Fear Factory as Cyber-metal, but this video is so industrial it's untrue.

Fear Factory videos

------

BPM = beats per minute, which in trance music, is the number of bass kicks per minute.

Hip hop = 90bpm
Smells like Teen Spirit = 110 bpm, roughly
House = 120bpm
Blue Monday = 120bpm
Trance = 140bpm
Garage = 140bpm
Drum n Bass = 170bpm
Hardcore = 180bpm
Black metal blastbeats = 290bpm?

I have always thought Industrial to be a little heavier as well. I dont' know-I don't listen to alot of techno, because I haven't really found alot of it to be to my liking. If anyone knows any good techno bands, please do share. I am always up for a new experiment!

it depends on how you class techno...but there's some really good Drum and Bass around which is probably a good step into techno from Powernoise and EBM.

try some of these
Hectate, Emotional Joystic, The Magus, Roni size

or even
Moby, endorphin, orbital, wagon christ, deep child, regurgitator, chemical brothers, Kraftwerk

A lot of Haujobb's is techno by most of the definitions here, as are a few of Bill Leeb/Rhys Fulber's sideprojects

Otherwise go to almost any CD shop, look in the sale section and there should be a double CD of trance music going cheap...a lot of it will be crap, but quite often you'll find some real gems of music

Oh, some people may be interrested in what appears to be an underground scene called Dark house

a gRAVER friend of mine wrote summed it up like this (quoting to make it easier)
/div wrote:
heard a strange new sound on NYE i thinks its called Dark House it had vocals like darkwave (think laibach and I.O.C)
but the rythmic feel of House and the pulse of acid

it made me shake my Gay-Lo for hours

That seems to be a good example of how "techno" and "industrial" (both used in their broader sense) can be fused, and may be good for people that want some diverse music

Hecate did a split with Lustmord, didn`t they??? Well, being a lover of Lustmord`s dark ambient sound, I`ve always been meaning to check out Hecate....

Dark house??? Usually when bands go into the 4/4 beats and mix it up with darkwave vocal styles it`s thrown into the EBM/electro genre, with Haujobb, Massiv in Mensch, etc. leaning slightly towards trance.... I`ll have to check it out.
