 member location search

Post
hi i mainly joined this site because i liked the atmosphere unlike certain other goth sites and now find myself wanting to find other goths with the good goth.net attitudes in my area!
i realise there are the location forums but these cover huge areas and threads within them entitled with your state or citys name are more oftern about shopping than where people live
now obviously i dont want to turn goth.net into a dating/meetup agency but it would be realy great if under 'member name search' could we have the option for 'member location search' then the people who wish to be located can have specific details like the name of there town while people who wish to remain anonymous simply do not fill in location or have something less specific like country or state!
this should be fairly easy to implement, save on some of the repetative posts in the location forums and help goth.net members meet other goth.net members :)

however one thing i deffinatly think is that results should in no way be sortable by gender as this could be used for the wrong reasons!

I, also would like this kind feature. However, I view the risk of people using it for the wrong reasons (paedophiles for example) as too high so I don't think it's a good idea.

P.s please don't see this a backseat moderating, I am merely offering up my opinion

Personally I agree it could be quite useful...by putting your location in your profile you are allready submitting yourself to who knows what (I'm sure profiles are available to the general public)

perhaps there could be other types of profile search...search by interrests for example

While such a feature may seem convenient to you, it may not be as easy to implement as it sounds.

I think members especially interested in having other members know where they are located have been known to post that information on the local boards. In fact, there are several threads dedicated specifically to asking for responses from other members in a particular geographical area (Michigan/Indiana, Tennessee, Perth, Sweden, Israel, to name a few off the top of my head).

I know those boards don't move nearly as quickly as many of the others, so you should keep in mind that many regular members don't check them as often. If you don't like the topic of discussion on your local thread or if you don't have a local thread, feel free to try to bring up a topic you'd like to discuss or create a thread specifically for your area.

That being said, a quick note on the use of the local threads might be in order. Be careful about how much information you reveal about your specific location. You should never reveal your exact address, school, workplace, etc. in a public forum.

it shouldent be too hard to implement it is just a basic search that looks at the location feild rather than the member name feild in your databases and matches words as it does in the member name search! and could probably be cloned from the member name search codeing (however you would have to get admin/webdesign to confirm that)

my points for it being convieniant for the mods such as yourself as well as for the members is that it should help limit all the repeat posts eg: ohio repeat thread
texas repeat
and there are many many more repeat posts as im sure you know!
the other is limiting posts that have grown a little large and redundant :eg
europeans 11+ pages
and the many small posts with under 5 replys that could have been solved with a simple location search ... (im sure i dont need to show you another example of what im getting at here)
it would also mean you dont get 5 diffrent london or the larger state's threads north, south, east, west and central

i know there are location forums but the hour of drifting through my one to not find the info i wanted made me think it would be a good idea to have a location search which as ive pointed out may help cut down on un-needed posts as well as letting thoes that want to meet people a chance!
also i realy dont want to be the guy who starts a south london thread just for it to get locked and pointed to the london thread which hasen't told me what i want to know hehe :)

aww well its just a thought and as this is the forum future ideas are put forward in i thought it was apt

that would require a hack on the board. Something I don't think Prez cares to add :P

yeah, its a bit difficult, but, eh, thats life :P

I guess you missed the part about the fact that this is forum software that we run, we don't write it. While we accept suggestions about the future of the board, as well as mainly for the site, this isn't really about actual board software functions, just sections/management/etc. stuff.

If you have suggestions about actual board functions, I suggest you head on over to the main Ikonboard forums and post the suggestion.

We however do not code/script these boards. Nor, as ShadowWolf pointed out, do we care to implement unofficial board hacks, should one exist for this particular function.

Read. the. thread. It's already been said that the type of search being proposed isn't a feature of the software used for these forums. So, it really doesn't matter how it works on other forums, as those may be run using different software.

Like it or love it, the answer is "no."

End of story.
