Well, there are so many kinds of industrial, and what people may call industrial...... from the early pure experimentation and noise manipulation of Throbbing Gristle or Psychic TV to the modern vocal dance/rhythm based "EBM", to the electronic metal that is coldwave.
I`d say Skinny Puppy would define everything industrial music is and remain one of my favorite bands of all time. Also check out Einsturzende Neubauten, old Ministry, Alien Sex Fiend, Pig, yelworC, Frontline Assembly, and Laibach.

dont forget KMFDM or Velvet Acid Christ. those are some of the most brilliant parts of industrial today.

hmmmm..... I liked Wumpscut better than VAC for that style.
Well, I guess we could throw Android Lust and Das Ich in there too.....

If by "brilliant" you mean "idiotic and unimaginative" (with regards to VAC).

My main problem with most VAC material is that it`s pretty formulaic..... start with an EBM beat, throw in some movie samples and whispered vocals, and there you go..... I hear their new stuff is better though. Haven`t listened to it yet myself.

This is easy. Industrial incorperates real life sounds, such as screams, metal on matal sounds, clips, et cetra. While techno is pure synth noise. I play keyboards and I love VNV Nation (favorite musik ever) but I still enjoy NIN (best industrial ever.. maybe KMFDM, but I like NIN better). Hope this clears things up for you. There is nothing better, in my opinion, than a little futurepop. Check it out: http://vnvnation.com I promise you'll love it

No, we won't. Because this is a thread about industrial music, not shitty futurepop acts with an entire backcatalogue that sounds like the same song.
If we wanted to talk about futurepop, we'd get fucked up on E, put yarn in out fucking hair and bounce around like retards at a club while somehow convincing ourselves that what we are listening to is "new" and "original".

Whoah, don`t be so harsh on the lad :I Rather than bash others` music tastes, lets point them in the right direction, shall we???
Anyways, I kinda have a top ten industrial album "list", only according to personal tastes though, as what is "essential for every industrial fan" seems to be pretty debatable.
Skinny Puppy - Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse
Skinny Puppy - Cleanse Fold and Manipulate
Laibach - Opus Dei
Einsturzende Neubauten - Silence is Sexy
Yelworc - Trinity
Ministry - Twitch
Frontline Assembly - Tactical Neural Implant
Das Ich - Antichrist
Die Krupps - the Final Option
Psychonaut 75 - Stealing the Fire From Heaven
I know I`m missing a whole bunch, but it`s a starting point.....

I don't think it would be possible to make a top 10 industrial album list...of the list you said, you missed many essential artists (and I know that I will have missed many more):
Throbbing gristle, coil, Merzbow, snog, Caberet Volitare, imminant starvation, iszoloscope
it would be impossible to narrow it down to 10...I mean Merzbox (Fingers crossed I'll buy one soonish) contains 50 CDs, and they could all be seen as important
-EDIT-- Forgot to mention that this is Vialick

Yeah, I suppose that was just my list of music that really made an impression and influenced me personally, not an "essentials" list..... Probably many of those I mentioned were in the "modern industrial" category as well.
No, the essential roots artists and albums are well into the hundreds. There`s so much out there to be explored, and so many different "sub-styles" of industrial as well.

Unfortunately your chances of finding a Merzbox now is slim to none.

hmmmm.... I think I saw that Clock DVA release at Time Bomb records the other day. About time to pick it up I guess....
Unfortunately, Current 93`s Dogs Blood Rising is the one C93 album I have trouble finding. Guess I`ll be ordering this one....
