Havent been on this site in soooo long...can't believe I still have profile here...
As soon as I heard someone mention J-rock I couldn't help but creep out from under my rock. I can't remember exactly how I got into J-rock or japanese music in general but it has some bizarre link between Cinema Strange and Moi Dix Mois. Then spanning a long time line from Hide (Matsumoto Hideto), to Malice Mizer and then onward to Gackt and one of the most amazing bands I've ever heard Dir En Grey.
I actually own quite a few J-rock/Visual Kai albums now, almost all of Gackts stuff, with the exception of his first two which are really hard to get ahold of, 3 of Malice Mizers albums, 3 Dir En Grey albums, one album from Miyavi (the new Hide some say?) and both of Moi Dix Mois albums.
Dir En Grey has to be my all time favourite band, ever, it's kind of an aquired taste, it took me quite awhile to get into but some of their songs are just amazing. One of the main attractions for me is the sheer variety of styles they use, all the while keeping that dark, forboding Dir En Grey style. The first time I heard the song Macabre on the Macabre album I was just awestruck, and when you know the lyrics its even better.
I havent even stratched the surface as far as alternative Jap bands go, there's so much out there but at the same time it's hard to find anything at all. There are alot of MP3 rotation sites out and about if you know what to search for and that can be a good start to finding some great bands. You could also try some nice general info site like J-ROCK SAGA
which have info on some of the more common bands.
