Inspired by my introduction, I went looking for a topic like this, but I didn't find one. If it does exist, and I overlooked it, you may (virtually) shoot me, hang me, or burn me at the stake (please underline the option of your choice).

So what are your favourite films? Not neccesarily the ones with the best cinematography, direction, actors or music, but just those films you can watch over and over again.

Name as many as you want to, but please do explain why these movies appeal to you this much...

Clarissa--Not only is Sean Bean hot ;) , but the story keeps bringing me back time and again, tragic though it may be. I've read the book twice, and am working on a third read. I identify in many ways with Clarissa, who just wants to do the right thing, but keeps getting screwed around by people who want to play with her mind and keep her under control. That's happened to me before. :(

Jane Eyre--I've read the book a few times, watched different movie versions, and love the BBC miniseries. It follows the book better than any other--It even has St. John Rivers!

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure--Yes, it's silly: That's why I love it. That, and the time travel. And I always did have a thing for Keanu Reeves.

LOTR--These books sat on my shelf for years until I saw the first movie. It was amazing. Since it came out after 9/11, it also connected with me on that level, since we had our own "ring" to carry and our own "evil" to fight.

Addams Family, Addam's Family Values--I don't think I need to explain these, being on a Goth forum. ;) I loved the TV show, and the movies bring their own element into it, since they used more of the original milieu of the comics. I saw Addam's Family Values with a friend after a breakup; it was funny when they dressed as ninjas, because my ex was a ninja.

Oh, one more: "Exile." This was a 1990 TV-movie on the Wonderful World of Disney. I taped it, and still have the tape. It's getting kind of worn now, so I wish they'd put it on DVD. A group of high school students get stranded on a desert island. It was especially interesting to me because, since 1988 or 1989, I'd been writing my own story about high schoolers on a desert island. I was a high school student, myself, so the modern slang, clothes and references were great. Now I find it was supposed to be a pilot, but never became a series, which is really disappointing. I also came across a similar show on one of the teen channels on cable. Since it's for teenagers, I probably wouldn't be able to tolerate it now. But it would have been great 17 years ago. Sometimes I wonder if it's somehow related to Exile.

Labyrinth (David Bowie as the Goblin King! but I adore the ballroom scene without which it just wouldn't be the same)
Testino (Salvador Dali & Disney collaboration, I see it mostly as a weird and wonderful Dali interpretation of Disney's normal themes of Love and Romance, with Disney-type graphics)
Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet (The setting and culture he placed the plot in, and the amazing visual element. visual element quite possibly also including Leonardo diCaprio. Just a little bit.)
Hook (The illegal one, with Robin Williams. Hook couldn't have been better portrayed in that, even if I can't remember the actor's name.)

Yes, so basically anything very fairytale-esque, and these choices kind of make me look like I'm a romance obsessive, and I don't mind romance as long as it's not saccharine (Labyrinth let me down a bit there).

Others I like are: Perfume, The Untouchables, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Jane Eyre, BBC (again a bit too romantic, at least for me), Valentine (the Horror movie), anything Peter Pan, The Pirates of the Caribbean...the list goes on.

Ergo, sorry if I was a bit extensive.

My top suggestion to anyone who asks is very simple:

The Power of One.

It's amazing.  It's been my favourite movie ever since I first saw it probably 13 years ago.  I think you can watch the entire thing on Youtube.

Aside from that, Children of Men, American Beauty, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, My Neighbour Totoro.

The Craft - Why? Because it's amazing. I watched that movie god knows how many times, and I love it. Even though it's a bitchslap for karma (they didn't do much black magic, thought it was unfair about the girl who had the skin disease though).

Thirteen - I love this movie. It's very disturbing though when you think of a 13 year old.

Resident Evil - Teehee. Zombies =)

Forrest Gump - I love this movie to bits. Seriously

For some reason, I can never remember a good half of the films I've seen, and I often forget ones I really liked. Here's what I can remember right now:

Silence of the Lambs - it's creepy, clever, and Hopkin's Lecter is, in my opinion, the best screen villain ever.

Rocky Horror - it's camped up to the nines, and it's huge fun.

Enter the Dragon - pretty good martial arts film, and Bruce Lee's unintentionally hilarious. Woooooo!

I'm also a big fan of the Alien films (especially 2 and 3).

12 Angry Men is a masterpiece of writing, and well worth watching.

My favourites are the only ones I liked enough to go through the hassle of burning onto my iPod. :P

The Princess Bride

Monty's Python's Search for the Holy Grail

and more recently, I can't get enough of watching Ratatouille.

Requiem For a Dream : Absolutely stunning film, everything about this film is completely perfect in my opinion, very moving and visually a treat, very sad ending, but if that kind of thing doesn't put you off, then I can not recommend this film enough :)

Labyrinth : Such a fun film, great puppets and animation by Jim Henson plus David Bowie!!! How could it not be awesome!?!? :P

Zoolander : This is probably my all time fave comedy's, so stupid its brilliant :P The petrol fight scene is classic!

Aliens : A roller coaster ride of insane action scenes mixed with horror, featuring the most bad ass ET ever imagined. Also quite possibly the most quotable film EVER :D
"Game over man! Game over!!!"

I like your taste.

And, speaking of David Bowie, another I wanted to add was the Man Who Fell To Earth.  Especially if you *like* Bowie.

The City of Lost Children - Wonderful cinema with so much occuring in the background. Everything is in the details and the outstanding acting.

Star Wars: episodes IV-VI - Darth Vader!

What Dreams May Come - I enjoy the background and the basis on the Richard Matheson book leaves me intrigued.

The Seventh Seal - Ingmar Bergman.

Blade Runner - Rutgar Hauer has some of the best lines. The concept of the movie and the writing make this movie outstanding.

A Clockwork Orange and pretty much anthing else made by Stanley Kubrick.

The Evil Dead series - Bruce Campbell is my hero.

Shakes the Clown - absolutely funny

I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet...

The Indiana Jones Trilogy

It's archaeology made cool. It's the hottest arcaeologist around. It's Harrison Ford looking delectable. Great action, great settings and stories, and just a boat load of fun.

Surely I can't be the only one that loves Indy?

Amélie

This is such a wonderful film with an amazing heart. It's truly touching, wonderfully acted. I love the vibrancy and use of colour in the cinematography. The score is awesomely done by Yann Tiersen. And Audrey Tatou is just fabulous as the titular character.

Pride and Prejudice 1995

Okay, not a movie strictu sensu, but a BBC mini-series. This is a pretty much perfect adaptation of the book, and I love it to pieces. I've watched it more times than I can count at this point.

Star Wars IV-VI

'Nuff said.

Lord of the Rings

Also 'nuff said.

Labyrinth

As mentioned in previous posts.

The Mummy

Not the greatest movie in the world. But I do love archaeology inspired movies, and it's set in the 20s/30s in Egypt, which also makes me a sucker. Brendan Frasier is very easy on the eyes, and Rachel Weisz is stunning, as always. John Hannah, who is also a very good actor, is excellent for some extra comic relief.

Enemy at the Gates

Jude Law. Mmm... that man is sex on celluloid. Also a great movie, very compelling, well filmed. And it's got some other great actors in it, Rachel Weisz, Ed Harris, Joseph Fiennes...

Stuff from Pixar

To be honest, Pixar has yet to disappoint me. I may not like each movie equally, but they're all loads of fun, work on many levels (for adults and kids alike), and never talk down to either audience. The jokes work well, the stories are generally original and fresh, and when they do do something in a genre that's already been done, they spoof it well (The Incredibles). The animation is top notch.

Brotherhood of the Wolf

A very awesome movie. Action and period drama and horror and intrigue all blended well. Kick ass fight scenes.

The Jason Bourne Trilogy

Probably the best action trilogy of the past decade or so. Awesome movies, well plotted and executed.

I really could go on and on with the listing of favourite movies, I have many. I'm sure I've forgotten to list quite a few as it is, and that's besides not listing more that I could off the top of my head.

My top five, in no particular order, are:

Fight Club
A Clockwork Orange
Donnie Darko
Trainspotting
Harvey

I like movies that mess with my head a little bit.

*Raises hand* I'm another big Indy fan, those films are ridiculously fun, and Ford was brilliant in the role :)
Just thought I'd add a couple more films to the list, it really is hard to limit yourself on these kinds of things

Ghost in the Shell : The animation, when this was new, blew my mind, I'd never seen anything this good, until then I assumed Akira would be the final word in animation. This too has been surpassed, but luckily its an enjoyable film anyway, these types of animes really bring me back to when I was 14 reading Cyberpunk novels (eg. the Shadowrun series).

Edward Scissorhands : I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet, my fave Tim Burton film.....and Johnny Depp film for that matter. Heartwarming without making me feel a little ill :P The sets and overall look of the film are fantastic, and Depp nails the part.

Near Dark : The best Vampire film ever made IMO, featuring...well....half the cast of Aliens :P
this film just oozes atmosphere, cant get enough of it.
