I'd include Sopor Aeternus, Gothica, and Ataraxia when mentioning "Neo-Classical darkwave".

My current classical obsession: Richard Wagner's Flying Dutchman.

I know about them but added bands I recommended moreso than others. I have Sopor Aeternus in my Medieval darkwave folder, as his works are variegated with mixtures of other genres and styles. But I guess if you don't mind dark neo-classical with ambient/electro/rock hints in it, then we can make the list larger.

hmm the name Richard Wagner has always haunted me yet I never gave him a try...

Most Medieval music has dark vibes to it due to the aura of the dark ages, but the Romantic era showed an appreciation towards the macabre moreso than its precedents.

There is an underground subgenre of neo-classical music called "Dark Neo-Classical", and I've collected most of the works. Here are some names:

La Pianiste Qui Rêvait D'humanité
Le'rue Delashay
Ophelia's Dream
Sieben

Other genres related to classical: "Neo-classical Ethereal"; "Neo-Classical Darkwave"; "neo-classical dark ambient":

All My Faith Lost...
Collection d'Arnell~Andréa
Olen'K
Thy Violent Vanities
Stoa
Autumn Tears
Arcana
Artesia
Impressions of Winter
Obsidian Voice
Das Holz
Silent Love of Death
Abandoned Toys
Darkly Pale
Dead Hours
L'Opéra Des Ombres
Les Joyaux de la Princesse
Serpentoria
Vladimír Hirsch
Nox Arcana
Penitent

And traditional classical music towards a darker vibe:

Bach, Johann Sebastian (Organ Works)
Chopin, Frédéric (Nocturnes; Waltzes)
Dvořák, Antonín (some of Piano Works)
Léonin (Vocals)
Rachmaninoff, Sergei (Nocturnes)
Shostakovich, Dmitri (some piano/violin works)
Brahms, Johannes (Some organ and piano works)

----

I write music for the piano, hopefully to make a dark neo-classical project in the future when money allows for software: melancholy piano; sad violin; romantic organ; etc.

Other than that, these are what I enjoy as alternatives for the dark vibe.

any spooky sounding songs in particular or cd with organ music you could reccomend?

I'm glad somebody mentioned this one. It's a freaken' classic I tell you!

I think a lot of Bartok could fit in here, as well as "DSCH" by Shostakovitch.

And who could forget Prokofiev's "Romeo & Juliet," or "Night on Bald Mountain" by Моде́ст Петро́вич Му́соргский (Modeste Mussorgsky)?

Virgin Black released Requiem, a three part album. Pianissimo is 100% traditional classical. Mezzo-Forte is a blend of classical and doom/rock/goth/ambient/etc. Fortissimo is heavy, growling, doomy, etc. with less classical instrumentation. It does feature a 'death' choir, however, consisting of numerous screamers, growlers, shriekers, etc.

There's an organ piece "Demonica" from the anime Shigetsutan Tsukihime I quite like. I can't find a sample online though :\

Post Re: 'Gothic' Classical Music
I'm going to have to protest at the lack of Beethoven here! In his late, experimental period are found some masterpieces of scariness - examples:

String Quartet in F minor, Op. 95 (first movement)
Piano Sonata #29 in B flat, Op. 106 "Hammerklavier" (last two movements)
Piano Sonata #32 in C minor, Op. 111 (just the first movement, the second is more like jazz :D )
Symphony #9 in D minor, Op. 125 (first movement)
String Quartet in C# minor, Op. 131 (final movement)
String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132 (final movement)
Große Fuge in B flat, Op. 133

I'd even include a few of his earlier works:
Piano Sonata in F minor, Op. 57 "Appassionata"
Symphony #5 in C, Op. 67 (third movement - the first is boring and we all know it)

Also, I'd agree with the recommendations of Bartók and Emilie Autumn - both people that gawffs should look at :)
Furthermore: Miranda Sex Garden have a mediæval vibe throughout most of their albums and lots of very classical moments. Not to mention that their first album is a collection of straight-sung [cheerful, sorry] mediæval madrigals.

Yes, but its also a band. I don't know how they fit into classical though...mostly doomy, rock/metal stuff, with a lot of atmosphere.

No mention of Albinoni's Adagio for Strings in G Minor? For shame!

Okay, so it was actually composed by Remo Giazotto based on a fragment of Albinoni's Sonata in G minor, but it's commonly attributed to Albinoni so ner. Then there's also Samuel Barber's marvellous Adagio for Strings, used to excellent effect in the PC game "Homeworld."

Two beautiful pieces of music I can never hear enough of.

Nice pieces, trag, but I got a bit fed up of them after I spent 3 years listening constantly to Classic FM and encountering them twice a day :P
