Yet another forums upgrade ...

Postby PreZ » Sat Mar 08, 2008 2:05 am

Well, I finally got around to doing it. The forums have been updated again to phpBB 3.0.0.

This is a major release that has two major advantages. First, a lot of the features we have grown to love are now part of the core system, and do not need to added as modifications to the core code base (which is a big from a maintenance perspective).
Second, there are better built-in controls for moderators and administrators to do their jobs properly.

You may notice searching being offline for now, as the boards need to re-index their search tables, which will take some time.

Please let me know of any issues you may find using the new forums.

So the moderators have to check every single post and give them each the OK individually before they appear on the board? Or are they OK'd in bulk (which seems to defeat the purpose of the system)? I like the old system better where you just post it and it's there, no delays.

If you're being put into the moderation queue, it is a bug that I need to fix.

He does seem to be on the moderation queue.
I've just been following around and approving. No worries Ender, or VI as the case may be.

Aside from that single bug, I am really liking the new format. The functionality is so greatly increased. There's so many ways to search and so much to play with. Thanks for the work, Prez.

I also had a question about the set-up, but I fear it is most likely me misunderstanding the function of a button. The "view new posts" button, what I always use to keep abreast of all new posts, doesn't seem to log what I've checked like the older version did. By way of example, before when I'd log on, it would say (10) new posts. Then I check them all and it would go back to (0). Very convenient way for me to see if there's anything new, or if I'm just being a desperate lonely bastard who's checking the board way too often. In the upgrade, even after checking all new threads, it still tells me there's (10) new posts. Glitch? Or am I being a lazy bugger who's reading it wrong?

Awesome additions.

I have yet to add another mod that will make it function as it used to - I will :)

OK, I fixed the bug (basically by re-writing someone else's buggy code) that was adding people erroneously to the 'Bad Boys/Girls' group. This is the group people are thrown into if they get 4 warning pips, and will force moderation on ALL forums. This is why Ender was getting moderated, and should not happen anymore.

Thanks, both of you, it's all working now.

But it was good to be bad. Anyway, I'm glad all these little BBCode buttons work in the new system. I used to have to hand-type them all, probably a problem with Firefox or something.

Is it a bad thing that so many bots are here?

PreZ, can you look at the PM system? I've had a PM sitting in my outbox for hours.

Messages will remain in your outbox until they are received by the recipient. Up until that point, you can actually cancel the mail or edit it. Once a recipient has received it it will move to your 'Sent Messages' and is no longer 'retractable' or editable.

Edited for accuracy

Oooh, I see. So until my reply to you (in PM) is picked up, it too will sit in there. I get it.

The bots are a special class of member based on their IP address or user agent. The bots are basically web spiders (google, yahoo, etc) that are indexing the site for their search engine. They have less privileges than users (in fact they are read only users and have no search privileges). But they can be safely ignored - so if you see a bot, it is just indexing, nothing to see here, move along :)
