Your daemon is an animal that goes everywhere with you. Your daemon's species is a representation of your own personality. Your daemon comforts you and guides you through all difficulties in your life. Your daemon sleeps when you sleep, curled up beside you. Your daemon hungers when you hunger, feels pain when you are hurting, etc.

Your daemon may be visible or invisible, depending on which world you live on. Here in our own world, our daemons are invisible -- but they exist with us, walking side-by-side with us and guiding us if we choose to listen to them. If we were to travel to the world of Lyra (Pullman's protagonist in the novels) our daemons would become visible.
