 Anyone do wine-tasting around here?
I love wine and have been trying a bunch of different ones lately. I've been trying a bunch of the southern Italian reds lately and they're pretty tasty. Also a bunch of the Spanish wines (Monastrell, Garnacha, Albarino, and a list of other grape strains). One sales guy where I shop has told me that there are several thousand strains of grapes in Italy (how the heck did they sort all of those out, or be able to tell the difference? ) so it's kind of a game to try something with which I wasn't familiar. And I'm always happy to taste some Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc. Some of the tasting terminology is rather interesting: "2007 Domaine Rouge-Bleu Cotes du Rhone "Mistral" This has impressive depth, with a very solid core of blackberry and macerated currant fruit, layered with dark, alluring toast, I know that toast can be dark, but "alluring"? smoked applewood, tar, melted licorice and mineral. The long, muscular finish What do they mean by "muscular"? is round and integrated, but still needs some time to stretch out fully. Maybe it needs a (wine) rack?

I used to be quite the wine enthusiast a few years back. Now I have moved onto the humble beer (ok, befor eI got pregnant - now I am a connosieur of bottled waters). I have no idea what alluring means, but I know muscular means it's heavy on the tannis. I've never been big on the ultra descriptives some people use. Just say it tastes like cherries, vanilla, oak, and sticks to your tongue like a wool sweater, ok? Funnyest thing I found was that a lot of the wines that were listed as very high quality on Wine Spectator or Wine Enthusiast were typically the ones I never cared for with the rare exception. I kept spending the big bucks trying the $20-40 bottles (because anything more was well out of my budget) and never found a real hit. I usually just stuck to the cheap (under $10) bottles by certain vineyards like Behringer or Concha Y Toro. Proof that one doesn't need to spend a lot of money to find a wine they like. ~spidey

I don't know that I'd call beer "humble" - there are so many great microbrews out there, and a bunch of them hail from my state! Will you go back to that when able to drink alcohol again? A bunch of the Italian and Spanish wines I've liked have cost around $10-$15 per bottle...and good old Trader Joe's (for anyone outside the USA reading this, it's a grocery chain of relatively small stores that manages to carry a pretty wide selection of gourmet foods at low prices) sells some decent wines for as little as $3 !! I'm not sure if I want to explain "Two-Buck Chuck", though.

Revenge makes for a tasty glass of wine. And yes, when I go back to drinking I will be returning to beer. I do have a region to suggest, though. You should try out some of the Chilean reds. They are sort of the "New thing" in the past few years, but they do make some damn fine Shiraz. ~spidey

Oh absolutely! There are some great Chilean wines! It just slipped my mind for a while, with so many wines out there to choose. I know people keep talking about Australian Shiraz, but I'll try the Chilean. I've also had good Sauvignon Blanc from there.
I've also tried a couple of Argentinian reds made from "Malbec" grapes. They're pretty good.
There's a tasting this afternoon at my local wine shop (well, it's the size of a warehouse) of a few wines from a vineyard in the southern Rhone. The winemaker will be there. Tasting 3 wines will cost $1 !

I tried wine tasting, however it didn't work out. Wine does not seem to agree with me and no matter how little I may try, even a little taste, I get these huge headaches! Not only that, but I also smoke which pretty much kills your taste buds.
