Post Straight razors
Who here shaves with a straight razor? It seems like a very goth thing to do, especially for Victorian goths. If you do, are their any good models you recommend? I plan to get one.

OOH you brought back a childhood memory for me. my grandfather kept a long leather belt in the cellar way, he used it to strop his straight razor. i guess it kept it sharp. he shaved once when i was there, right in the kitchen sink.

Later my dad informed me that was the strop they got whipped with if they misbehaved.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strop (just in case you had no idea what a strop was. )

also i would reccommend a good shaving soap and brush with a mug..much better than that stuff in a can.

there is much more to straight razor shaving than i ever imagined. Read a couple of wiki articles and it sound rather complicated to me. But then I am female :D

http://artofmanliness.com/2008/01/04/how-to-shave-like-your-grandpa/

great site , check it out for all kinds of info.

:D
thanks for the walk down memory lane

I want to get one because they give a munch better shave then anything else. Not even an octo-blade razor with nano carbon tips enforced with tungsten. I should go work in the marking department of Gillite, lol.

I use the Bodyshop soap, its not cheap but goes a very, very long way. I still use my grandfathers shaving cup as well (like a teapot to hold water and a dish shape on top to make the soap up).

I don't think I could use a straight(or safety) razor to shave everything that I shave...

Forget the straight razor, as soon as I get permission to build a forge in the backyard I'm just going to make a knife and shave with that.

Up the macho quota and just stick your head in the forge. "hair is for wimps! ...so is skin!"

I read about this and considered it for awhile. The start-up cost is a bit steep, and I chicken out every time I'm about to order the stuff. I did read that finding a used blade is the best way to start, but one of the best pieces of advice I read was, "Do not try to shave with a straight razor in the shower."

Letalis--you're a straight razor man?

Wolfie---you're talking about under arms, right?

Lach, I don't do it myself. Its a treat to visit a gentlemens retreat and get the works done.

Does anyone know where to get a good straight razor for under $100 or so?
