In my opinion, Good hair is clean hair. If you look like you might have ticks or mange... Ick.

Just keep up with hair maintenance. If you have visible roots, that annoys me, especially if you bleached your hair and then dyed it a dark color. It's just...ugh.

By "visible roots", I'm guessing you mean the transition between your colored hair and your natural hair color when it grows out? I bleached part my hair and dyed it violet a couple of times, usually at the very beginning of the year (literally on Jan. 1 or on the last day of the year) and I just let it grow out. I refrain from "touching up" because I don't want to put so many chemicals on my hair, since hair as a whole is very fragile, and I'm not one of these chameleon people. My hair is still growing out the violet, about three inches or so. I'll probably dye all my hair black at the beginning of next year.

Well, actually, there is, but only if it isn't taken care of well.

I think that hair at its best should be overall flattering in cut and colour. If ink-coloured hair doesn't look good on someone, they shouldn't dye it that colour. A friend of mine actually looks better with black hair than his natural colour, which is just flat. It does nothing for him. (Also, guys, don't grow your hair out if you don't think it looks good that way. My friend also made that mistake. He looks terrible.)

Personally, my hair varies. I'll curl it, pin it, tease it, straighten it, braid it, or just do whatever I feel like that day. My hair is naturally curly and somewhat frizzy, so keeping it free of fuzz is important for me. I have a very Victorian aesthetic, so I'll pin it up in curls or will do a Gibson girl at times. Other times, it ends up looking something like Mrs. Lovett's or Emilie Autumn's hair. I'll go straight when I can, but I also like to do ringlets. And, sometimes, my hair goes retro. Heh. It more or less depends on my mood and the amount of time I have to do my hair.

What are your opinions or insights from Chris Rock's documentary 'Good Hair'?

I'll admit, I let my roots show but seeing as my hair falls out because of my meds (and even more so since I started dyeing it), I try to limit the dye jobs. Sometimes I even make myself cringe though and have to go to the salon. And I don't do it myself, I'm a chicken when it comes to that. I let the pros do it.

My roots don't show as much as my color fades. I can't stand taking cold showers to keep the color good when it's already cold outside, so after a few weeks I end up with brown-black instead of blue-black. It looks more natural, but I like the unnatural look better.

I currently have an undercut and I'm thinking of dreadlocking what hair I have. Has anyone ever seen this done before? I haven't, but I thought it might look nice. (I was planning to string pearls in it.) My hair is very thin, and I imagine dreads might make it appear more voluminous without me having to backcomb all the time.

I see and admire the deeper arguments this thread is making, but, on a lighter note: I have super-curly hair with major tendencies towards frizz, though I'm white. I've always despised it, especially since all the junior high kids made fun of it mercilessly (called me "Frizz-Frizz," which sounds innocuous now but seemed like the worst possible insult then). I tried the blow-drying and the flat-ironing and never managed to do a very good job with either. Finally, in the last few years, I've accepted my hair (and found a stylist--if you ask for someone who "specializes in curly hair," you won't get the mushroom cut). I think it looks stupid in tight little spiral curls, but I get zillions of compliments, and it takes about 10 minutes to style rather than 35. For me, good hair = relaxation about your hair type + a good haircut + a decent styling cream/gel/whatever.

It's hard to give a specific answer as the question is a bit too general. In some cases, red streaks would look great, but I can imagine in others would look totally horrible. A lot depends on what style you wear at the moment, and the type of streaks you're talking about.

It might be best to post a picture of yourself in the "Picture" thread, and ask the question there - but be a little more specific about what you're trying to achieve. Then, I think, any response you get will have more value to you.

So I went and did it... My hair which was once an ashy blonde is not a shade of black. I dyed it myself along with my eyebrows and I think I did a pretty decent job. Most of my friends like it as far as I know. I was a bit nervous about the transition but I'm glad it turned out well. I still don't "look" like a goth though. I wear far too much normal clothing. It does give me an edge and defines my features pretty well. I have blue eyes so the color makes them pop.

Notes for dyeing hair from blonde to black

I used the darkest share of brown as opposed to actual black. It worked very well.

Put petroleum jelly around your eyebrows before applying the dye so that it wont get in your eyes

Focus on applying the dye evenly. Don't forget the wispy hairs on your neck or your roots. If you have thick hair like me buy two bottles of dye in case there is not enough in the first bottle. I learned this lesson the hard way.

If you made a mistake with the evenness of the color, wait a couple of days before dyeing again or you'll damage your hair.

Well, at least you're literally relaxed about your hair now. I personally don't bother with a hair stylist. My ma use to take me to a hair dresser back in high school, but she didn't want to continue paying nearly $60 for work she could do at home. Plus, a lot of hair stylist (not all but a lot) aren't the specialists that they say they are. Hardly any of them say that they'll make your hair healthy or grow even though a lot of people go in expecting that they will do so, and being a business, they don't necessarily focus on a particular costumer's needs since they often do five customers at a time. Their first priority is to make your hair look presentable, not healthy. Although, it does make sense since hair stylist merely style hair, and they're not dermatologists.

I don't even go to a hair dresser when I want my hair dyed.

If I had only known that before I went through the nightmare of having my hair 'razored'(ripped with scissors, actually. I can still hear the sound of hair tearing in my nightmares.)! They are only trained in the most basic or popular hairstyles from what I've experienced. There was one girl that my husband and I used to follow from one salon to the next until she decided to quit doing hair. She would tell us when she was moving so we could still come see her. It's rare to find a good stylist and when you get a great one you never want to let go.

All in all I decide what looks good on me, for now I've condemned my hair to underneath my bandana (because it's cut really short from when I had it nice and long >.>)

My "good hair" is short hair. I've tried a few times to grow it out, but it's uncontrollable and doesn't look good. My short hair is easy to style and color.
