 Gothic Revival Homes
We've seen breathtaking pictures of Europe's gothic cathedrals, but I have to say that I'm also quite taken with the smaller gothic revival homes of New England. The gothic revival movement in architecture and art (also called the Victorian gothic era) began during the mid-18th century (in England), attempting to bring back a medieval aesthetic in architecture and art. Here's a link to a slide show from Historic New England: Gothic Revival slide showIf I could have one of these "cottages," I think I would take the Justin Morrill Homestead in Vermont. Which would you choose? Or, would you live in a gothic revival home at all, if given the opportunity? Does a medieval aesthetic appeal to you? -- Nephele

Roseland and Athenwood are also nice. Morril Homestead has that awesome bay window, though.
I'd actually prefer a Victorian style house with a tower/turret thing. Those look more like castles, to me, than the Gothic revival homes.

I do prefer the Morrill Homestead though. Personally, I'd choose to live in a converted church- I just love the architecture of churches (bonus if it comes with a graveyard )

 Re: Gothic Revival Homes
Here's another vote for Athenwood (I probably like it best because of that molding on the outside, and all the trees). Kingscote looks like it has some interestingly shaped rooms, although I'm not a fan of that long driveway. In any case, I am a real sucker for those high-sloping ceilings. Harpy (who confesses to being more of an Arts and Crafts movement kind of gal)

 Re: Gothic Revival Homes
The Arts & Crafts movement is strongly linked to the Victorian gothic revival, though the styles vary and perception of what is 'rustic' or traditional is quite different in the US. A lot of the UK architecture is done in brick and stone, following the medieval churches, rather than wood. If anyone is interested in a bit of travel, Bristol and Bath have a lot of Georgian, Victorian gothic and empire architecture (all the nasty modern building are sites where the bombs hit in WWII.)
At last! A thread with no love for Bauhaus!

Roseland was my favorite, I have to admit. I love those houses!

They're all beautiful! I love the revival. @ Defeaning Silence - why a graveyard? I love graveyards, I use to live in a house next door to a graveyard, but I couldn't live THAT CLOSE to it.

 Re: Gothic Revival Homes
The last two look a lot like "Grant-style" homes that have had everything roof-level replaced.

 Re: Gothic Revival Homes
Athenwood for me, definitely! Even better that I have a Greek patron deity, too I love bay windows, and I'm lucky in that the Victorian terraced house I live in has three of them (one in the kitchen, one in the master bedroom and one in the living room).
