I'm glad they are protecting his grave, I've always felt it a crime that he isn't celebrated more, here in Ireland. Other countries are very proud of their famous artists, and many have museums dedicated to each one. I was just in Amsterdam were both Van Gogh and Rembrandt both have their own museums, Wilde deserves nothing less. Though perhaps the man himself, would not want that : "Biography lends to death a new terror." Being a writer doesn't exactly lend itself well to a museum, aside from enshrining past residences. Surely an Oscar Wilde Theatre would be fitting of a storyteller and play-write?

Re: Oscar Wilde - Birthday Hails
You could combine the 2, and a large portion of the Van Gogh museum is dedicated to those influenced by him, and those that influenced him, as a museum it could display original writings/letters, hell, even doodles! Would it have mass appeal? No. Then...is that really the point? Isn't the point that he came from here, and we are really proud of that fact? Wilde had a very interesting life, entertaining, depressing and appalling in equal measure, something I'm sure he would approve of...after the fact. Do people not really interested in Van Gogh go to the Van Gogh museum? I'm sure they do, why? Because its there. Beyond his work, there's also his sexuality, there's just so much for a museum to explore. I was at the Anne Frank museum and someone actually asked me "do you know who this kid is?" (I'm not even joking). I'm not trying to compare the two, just that, it could be something as big a deal for Ireland. We don't have much of a past in terms of visual artists, but with language, be it novelist, poet or the theatre...our cup runneth over, and we just don't celebrate it.
I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say Oscar Wilde is the most important thing to happen to literature and theatre since Shakespeare.

Creepier than the grave... are those Madame Tussauds wax works. I wonder whether Oscar would have been amused or horrified by this likeness of him? -- Nephele
