 Re: Health and Fitness
Well I can't say I do much. Throw the bicycle on the bus to go up the hill then ride it a short distance to work then ride home all downhill more or less. I guess it counts? I found riding up to work was too much to do 5days a week so I cheat a little.

 Re: Health and Fitness
What do you consider a short distance? Build up a little at a time if you're concerned that you're not doing enough I ran 4 miles this morning, watching form so that I was running smoothly and not bouncing. That didn't bother my back, although I am getting an occasional twinge in the right hamstring. What! My left just healed! Can't win for losing. It may just be radiating down from my back.

 Re: Health and Fitness
Wow harpy! 4 miles is a lot! Hopefully the twinge in your hamstring doesn't mean anything. On the bright side I think this diet and exercise routine I have myself in is working. So far I've lost 3 pounds and I just need to get rid of 11 more pounds.

Ah, yes...exercise. That pleasure awaits me as from next week. Ouch, I can feel the aches and pains already

 Re: Health and Fitness
So this week's exercising should go fine. It's already off to a good start. Which is obviously good. But, the week after, I have the week from hell. Monday - Bone marrow biopsy, Wednesday - Seeing my oncologist, Thursday: Spinal tap, iv chemo and two midterm exams. How the heck am I supposed to keep up my exercise (now I've lost another pound, so that's 4 pounds so far) with all of that going on?

 Re: Health and Fitness
Dragonwings: *hug* hang in there! Focus on the most important things first (namely the doctors' visits and studying for the midterms). Once those things settle down, then put more attention back to the exercise. I haven't done any exercise since my marathon. Back to feeling fine, but I may have aggravated my minor foot injury, so I want to play it safe and just really rest up until about mid-March before trying to get back into the swing of things. Also a fun tidbit for those thinking of one day running a marathon (and something Harpy can probably laugh with me over): three of my toenails are black (yes, they're very gothic now!) (okay, really, I'm sure there are blisters under them, but I don't have a way of easily getting to them to drain them without causing a lot of pain). And yes, this means they might fall off once the blisters underneath finally go away And in final random news. Like I said, haven't worked out any since my marathon, but have been eating at home more, eating healthier, etc. Down to 180 pounds! I last weighed 180 when I was a junior in high school (well, back then I was also in better shape with cross country, but I'm not complaining...better than being at 210 like I was at the start of the year!).

 Re: Health and Fitness
*hugs Rogoth back* I'll try to do that. I just didn't want to mess up a good thing when it's going so well. But yeah, probably best to take it a bit easier next week.
Glad to hear that your diet is going well. Hope you get some rest and and your foot gets better soon!
I'm going to do some more exercise in a bit. Hopefully that'll go well.

 Re: Health and Fitness
Yes Rogoth, I do know about blackened toenails - we're in good company there. They may fall off but they grow back, no worries. It's fun to brag about how you got them. Well, I'm regenerating again. I had an MRI to find out what's bothering the lower half of my back. The darned thing scared me (I did not realize I'd be claustrophobic until I went into it - they put me in headfirst so my head was enclosed for a long time. I panicked so they took me out and put me back in headfirst so I could see the opening was just a few inches from my head). Results: Annular tears between vertebrae L2-L3, L3-L4, L4-L5 Disc protrusion between L4-L5 Not as scary as it sounds. My physical therapist wasn't too worried, I just need to get treated (low-impact exercises, manipulation, a cortisone shot to speed healing). These actually are fairly common - from wear and tear as you get older, or traumatic injury from high-impact sports. I think mine was partially from long gradual uphills late in a long run combined with a too-rough deep tissue massage. No more of those for me! Part of becoming an ole coot, I guess

 Re: Health and Fitness
Is there anyone else here that has experienced hearing things that aren't really there from insomnia? Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread. I haven't slept in three days now, and I keep hearing someone saying my name. I always thinks it's my roommates that calling for me, but when I ask, they haven't said anything. I've also been hearing loud crashes - I think people call this exploding head syndrome. Sooo dramatic. Very frustrating. I wish I could just sleep like a normal person.

 Re: Health and Fitness
Any one have any ideas for low impact workouts? I think i've been pushing myself too much with the treadmill. I think its been making my heart problems act up. Being to physical lately just makes me so tired and dizzy. I hate being like this. I like to be active! But... now I can't even go walking without having problems. @Alice, please see a doctor! We don't want anything to happen to you, hon.

But maybe you should see a doctor first, to see whether you should be working out at all with heart problems and what kind of work out is best for you. Alice, I hope you have been to a doctor and that you have had some sleep since. Harpy, Rogoth, and others with injuries, do take care of yourselves!

nachtvlinder wrote: Harpy, Rogoth, and others with injuries, do take care of yourselves! Thanks! <3 Everything seems to be fine now for me. Just in time for the 10K I'm signed up for this weekend! Haven't really worked out lately (mix of busy and wanting to make sure any injuries I had were healed), but the attention to eating healthier, not eating before I go to sleep, and eating smaller portions seems to be helping. Down into the 170s! I weigh almost as much as I did in early high school when I was super in shape running cross country. I'm not at the same fitness level in my opinion, but I'm certainly not complaining. Just got to keep it up. (And I guess with my car temporarily out of commission, I'll be forced to walk or ride my bike more unless I want to have fun figuring out bus routes and connections to get to places)

 Re: Health and Fitness
I'm kinda proud of myself - I've lost 8 pounds, and can now fit into my next-size-down jeans. W00t. It's a good thing I love celery.
