You know, there's no law against not wanting to be pale with black everything. I (sort of) knew that since (most) goths are quite individualistic. Eh, yes and no. Goth is like any other subculture: On one hand, everybody pays a lot of lip service to the concept of "individualism", but I doubt anybody would take it seriously if, say, Paul Weller kept the same cloths, and made the same music he always has, but suddenly proclaimed himself to be a "goth" one day. There are not only the common stereotypes of the subculture from the outside (such as, in Goth's case, pale skin, black hairdye, black nail varnish, etc...), but unspoken rules within it. It's generally acceptable for those within the subculture to subvert, bend, and on occasion even break the "rules", as long as it stays in-line with a certain aesthetic and/or philosophy --but displaying a clear ignorance of them will not get one taken seriously within, and only contribute to outside confusion about what the subculture is all about. Individualism in any subculture is only apparent when compared to the mainstream / overculture --but to those within any particular subculture, a level of knowledge of the rules and thus conformity is expected. It's one of the reasons I don't stick around with any one "scene" or another too strictly, because sooner or later, some-one's going to get "all up in my grill", as the kids say, cos I'm "clearly not [subculture] (enough)". Approach a strict adherent to any subculture as a true individual, and you'll see how fast that talk of "individualism" goes out the window.

I understand that I need personally to have an individual look but I'm studying other goth to realize the potential. I'm trying to express what goth I can but I'm a father and a sole provider and it needs to adapt to this (it does, but since my family has never seen me goth I tone it down to normal black clothes, with DM's, at home. Similar at work.) it all seems to be like a wheel, über goth in the center, others orbiting around the central point, each trying to get as close to the center as is possible. Due to life circumstances, comfort level, and the expression of personal individuality few are in the center of this wheel. Since the more you push to get to ideal goth the less likely you can carry it throughout a lifelong journey (higher chance of dropout) it is most of all an exercise in balance and moderation. I know nothing about the scene being a lone goth but thanks FiB, I learned something

My only gripe is that while I later became a fan of him - Don Henrie the "vampire" makes the whole vampire scene/culture look like all we are are a bunch of Anne Rice fanatics. I meannn, I am and totally would dress more *Victorian* but also throw in the occasional medieval cloak into the mix, but I hate how Don makes everyone who identifies as "vampiric" into a cliché. There needs to be that sense of separation between "goth" and "vampire." Just because both scenes have in the past bled into each other in my opinion, rather WELL doesn't mean they can't exist independently of each other.

I love Don Henrie, though he's a bit of an ass to be honest. I agree with you. I'm a big fan of both myself, but I tend to be a bit of a cliché. It doesn't mean all goths are like that. It's not helping the image that all goths are blood drinkers.
