Post RIP- Maurice Sendak Passes Away at 83
On Tuesday, it was discovered that beloved children's author, Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) passed away due to stroke complications. I was very saddened to hear this, which poses a question for everyone: when you were young, did the imagination and work created by Maurice teach you to embrace the idea of thinking differently, and that being different is okay?

I was just about to post his obituary, and you beat me to it!

The New York Times wrote:
Maurice Sendak, widely considered the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century, who wrenched the picture book out of the safe, sanitized world of the nursery and plunged it into the dark, terrifying and hauntingly beautiful recesses of the human psyche, died on Tuesday in Danbury, Conn. He was 83 and lived in Ridgefield, Conn.

Maurice Sendak, Author of Splendid Nightmares, Dies at 83

I adored Maurice Sendak's work -- both as a child and as an adult. In fact, my thesis for my master's degree in library science was on Sendak's work.

The Wild Things are howling in mourning. Rest in peace, Maurice.

I'll admit, where the wild things are isn't my favorite book. But Maurice Sendak was an amazing guy. Whether you like Colbert or not, Mr Sendak was interviewed by him, and he was awsome.

That interview made me laugh out loud! Thanks for the links!

There were suppositions that the monster images "scared children", which at least for me (and probably most of us here) they never did. I thought monsters to look rather endearing and a bit awkward and even cuddly, but never scary. What a great subconscious to have that can enable someone to draw a "monster" with such qualities.

I don't think I had ever heard of his work until the movie. He's not that big over here in Europe.

Aw, poor guy. Hope death is treating him well! I loved Where the Wild Things Are, personally.

I think I have the book "Where The Wild Things Are" but as Arq said he is not that big over here. I'm sad to hear of his passing though. :(

I remember reading in an interview that he didn't like to autograph books for children because the kids got upset and wondered why a stranger was scribbling on their books.

Very interesting guy.

I dunno if it's really Christopher Walken reading this. Could be that guy who impersonates him and makes all those YouTube videos. Still funny.

Christopher Walken reads Where the Wild Things Are
