I've wanted too, but I don't know anyone near me who plays.

 Re: Dungeons and Dragans
Check out your local gaming shops, as most towns have one, even the ones that focus on Clix or Magic the Gathering. You can most likely find a crew of gamers to join. I've never played with anyone other than close friends, but RPGs are a major hobby for my hubby and our game group (everything from D&D to World of Darkness). Most gamers I know of are into Pathfinder (which is a knock-off of D&D in my opinion, but I won't derail the conversation) and later additions of D&D (think 4.0, again I won't derail with my hatred of it). Game groups tend to be shy of new-comers, but tough it out and they'll eventually open up if your play style fits with theirs.

I have never played the game, but I've seen and like the movie a lot. I might play if the chance ever came.

 Re: Dungeons and Dragans
I had a sense there was a D&D thread, and my Clairaudience spell proves me correct! I have quite the large number of characters, as well as custom monsters and a custom created plane of existence. In fact, the gentleman in my avatar is a major NPC in aforementioned plane of existence. 3.5 player here, I gave 4.0 a fair try and came back to this one. I also play DDO! Midi: Oh goodness, the movie...I have nothing nice to say about it. I think you'll like the game a GREAT deal more.

Midi: A good D&D or any RPG session is like playing a character in a novel, or like being in a play without a script. Instead of reading it, you're making the events happen. It's much more than the rather...er...let's just say it's not what the movie made it out to be. Many fantasy books have come out of D&D games and their supplements (think Dragonlance). If you ever get a chance, definitely give it a shot.

If I understand correctly, Pathfinder came about when Wizards of the Coast put out 4th edition and gave 3.5 an open license for use. Since the majority of D&D fans much preferred that version, Pathfinder was born and even improved upon what was already great. I've not played it personally, but it looks solid from everything I've read and heard through other gamers. I miss having a regular D&D group. The hubby was at least able to get a few people interested in a Warhammer Dark Heresy campaign, which while fun (a lot of fun with a good, creative group), just isn't a fantasy setting. I love my mages. The only problem with their equivilent in Warhammer is that at any given time, casting a 'spell' (IE psycic power) leaves you with a 10% chance of something bad happening. If it's really bad, your head can go boom or a demon can take over your body. Sure, it adds to the fun, but sometimes it's just fun to show off with magic. You know, without the risk of brain explosions.

It may be cheezy and the acting could be improved, but overall I liked it. laughingcrow wrote: Midi: A good D&D or any RPG session is like playing a character in a novel, or like being in a play without a script. Re: Dungeons and Dragans
I used to play quite a bit in high school, but now I'm more into collecting the various books, novels, monstrous manuals, dice, art, and other paraphernalia.
I'm still very much in love with the "D&D universe", as to me, it will always be the reference point for all other fantasy to be judged (save Tolkein, it's main influence).
My favorite realms are Forgotten Realms and Planescape.
Sadly, I haven't had any time during my adult life to check out any of the numerous new video games sprouting from the franchise.
The movie was garbage, plain and simple. A huge waste of time done as a pure mockery of the franchise.

 Re: Dungeons and Dragans
Like I said the movie was good to me. I can't really defend it- it's a personal opinion and preference and everyone's entitled to their opinion. I must say I'm intrigued by it and should I ever get a chance to play I would. It seems like the sort of thing I wouldd greatly enjoy.

 Re: Dungeons and Dragons
Midi--you should totally play. It's completely absorbing and very engaging. I played for years, and eventually became a DM for our group. The players seem to have had "issues" with my NPCs..... AND if your group can't meet, or you can't get enough, do check out Baldur's Gate for the PC. It's based on the 2nd edition rules, the AI is pretty good, and is very nice to play.
