The general DIY thread - PICS!
I've been snuffling through this forum, and am finding lots of tangential or extremely specific threads about DIY, but not really a general one where you can post your projects as you make them. I figured I'd make one that can encompass clothing, jewelry, modded furniture... all that jazz. Just to avoid necro-ing, have similar content in one spot so it's not scattered through a million dusty threads, and to keep at least one thread of this nature relatively active. What do you say? I'll post some of my old stuff first. It's tacky cheating because I've shown these around a lot elsewhere, but it's just to kick off and bump. Anyway, I can't make this sort of stuff as quickly as I want. Big sugar skulls http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 8563_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 5378_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 0378_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 2815_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 0426_n.jpgStuffed batties http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 2882_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 4044_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 4609_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 5462_n.jpghttp://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak- ... 5665_n.jpgOk, now I ask you - what are you making? Pics!

Here you go! I got the recipe for the sugar dough from Charming Pixie Flora's video tute. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRGSVbFO0CgAnd the batty pattern came from here http://sewing.craftgossip.com/tutorial- ... 009/10/29/If you're interested in making other kinds of toys, a good term to Google is 'softies'. But this thread can be for anything you've made folks! The sky's the limit.

Terscha wrote: School holidays is coming soon... DIY time! can't wait! Been waiting for a thread like this for a long time. Here are the last three things that I've made: Here is my three-strap arm band, secured with s-hook chains with d-rings at the tips that the straps loop through and snap together. I need to replace the leather spine, this time using a sewing machine to do it rather than by hand (which was a pain in the ass, those thin strips of naugahyde are amazingly tough). Here is my armband watch with keys strung through on a mini-chain (also the tips are sewed on to prevent the keys from moving all over the place). I got the keys and the watch face from the local antique store. The watch face is tied to the armband tightly so that it may be removed easily to have the battery replaced. Here is my newest one: a studded bracelet using screws as the studs. It is secured by mini s-hooks that hook onto d-rings. I would like to make sugar skulls one day as well - thanks for posting links!

Those are awesome Nightspectre! Those must have been so hard to sew, but it was done really well.

Re: The general DIY thread - PICS!
Wait, wait, wait! I recognize those bats! You are either Kit or FruitBat from another forum. You do some awesome DIY stuff, hun! Okay, I'm just gonna show some stuff for one of my dolls. I'm not currently working on it, but it's on my list after I finish my nieces' faeries. Dorrie hooves! Sorry, these are gonna be huge. Photobuckets being a huge knob ATM so I don't want to spend hours editing the pix. construction 1sketchbuilding hooveswith leg startedroughshaping 1shaping 2legs1legs2built up1built up2sidesidetestingYou can see from the test fitting where I need to shorten the leg(above the hoof) to straighten the leg out a bit so that when I joint them they will have a greater range of motion and look better. Plus, it's just not pleasing to the eye to have a long pastern....that loooooong, lol.

Yes, yes, you have. Check your inbox Those hooves are awesome. Freestanding I briefly had the fantasy that they were to be attached as boot heels and worn by humans, but in the last shot I saw that they fitted the doll. That's quite a talent you have, to sculpt from a drawing. IMO you don't really need to straighten them if you don't want to, it looks as if she has a hip tilted pose to go with her jutting boobs. Did you paint the face?

Did you paint the face? Thank you! The drawing is just a blueprint to check width, height & shape for the initial sculpting. Yes, I did paint her face. It came out pretty well from what I had in mind. It's only the second face painting I've done on her, though.

Awesome! It's a good job with paint, I tend to have to fix smudges even using washable makeup on my own face.

I'm actually pleased with her face cuz it literally took all freakin' day to do that day. I am going to redo it early next year when I get some decent pastels and new paints. The key to make up(or any skill, actually) is just practice. I'm beginning to think that 'natural talent' doesn't actually exist that every single skill one possesses is taught and nothing is 'innate' except our struggle to survive. Anyway, just practice and you'll get better. There's also tons of tutorials for just about anything(sewing, sculpting, makeup, painting) on youtube.

That hits the nail on the head exactly for me. Well, I have soooooo many people always telling me "could never sew something like that" "I could never sculpt, play XYZ instrument, sing, paint, cook cobble...yadda" than they always say "YOU MUST HAVE A LOT OF TALENT! You're so LUCKY" *sigh* Yes, let me tell you how much 'luck' went into any of my hobbies. A HUGE WHOPPING 0%!!!! Instead of giving myself a regular manicure, dealing with my hair in the mourning, paying attention to talk shows/fashion....I work on my hobbies. It's as simple as that. This isn't a rant against people trying to give me a sincere compliment because I understand the sentiment behind it(really, I do?), but about those people who always tell me "I could never do that, I don't have that kind of 'talent'". Sure you do! Everyone does! That's just an excuse to not learn something that may interest you. Everyone starts somewhere and trust me, even the best artist started out as a n00b whose work was more than likely pretty laughable. Sorry, I'm not trying to turn this into a rant or anything. I just hate seeing people squash their own potential.
