Here's a treat for kids who still remember the 80's. Dreamworks is going to do a new Transformers movie, slated for next year. Michael Bay (The Island, The Rock) is going to Direct it, and a certain Mr. Spielberg has his fingers in it as well.

And, of course this is going to spawn a HUGE merchandising enterprise, much to the delight of Hasbro. They are even going to have a lunch box/movie tie in.

It's only a matter of time before they make an attempt at a new Voltron movie...

Keep the Star Wars impressions in the Star Wars thread, okay?

It's not like we need two over-merchandised topics in one thread.

Frankly, I liked the Transformers. It's not going to get the excitement of, say, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory from me, but it might be neat.

Just trying to make the best of a bad situation with a quote that accurately sums up my feelings on the matter. I was a massive Transformers fan when I was a kid ("Transformers: The Movie" was the first movie I ever saw at a cinema) and the idea of the live action film fills me with dread. I mean, come on, you all know deep in your childlike heart-of-hearts that it's going to suck.

Consider me an official sceptic.

At least I'll still have the original movie to cherish and enjoy.

But alas, we must all wait until 2007...

Actually, I don't really care if it sucks (which it, of course, most likely will). The Transformers were always pretty cheesy anyway, I'm sure I'm not the only one to have recognized this even as a kid. It's part of the charm, not unlike the old Star Wars flicks. Plus, all the new merchandise will be fun. God, how cool would it be if they made new characters in the old 80's metal style, as opposed the new all-plastic crap.

I hope they don't redesign Megatron again. And I hope they keep that old "keekeeuuuooowww..." sound whenever someone transforms....

::sighs::

Why do I care?

Soundwave's gonna be a helicopter.

No, seriously.

~Nachtzehrer, who saw the Optimus Prime truck from the movie at ComicCon International in San Diego last week~

That series had the coolest sounds.

I remember when they tried to rehash the damn thing by using old footage and this damn obnoxious cgi spinning cube every 3 seconds.

And then they did one where they transformed from robots to robot dinosaurs......................!? WTF sense does that make?

Wasn't there a guy who was a tape deck?
I wonder if he's ipod man now.

They also made a beast wars series in cgi. I don't like the cgi series (or know anyone else who does either). I remember there being a tape deck guy in the original cartoon. I'm not holding out much hope for the new film, I'm too used to seeing old stuff being remade badly.

Soundwave was the tape deck guy.

I, uh . . . I guess I am a pretty big Transformers geek.

Ah yes... I had a toy of soundwave... he turned into a real sized tapedeck.... but he idn't actually work.....

I think i broke off his legs accidentally.
Some of the more complicated toys required a fair bit of violence to get them to transform... like some space shuttle guy.

Did I read the comic?

Let's just say that I remember when Ratchet thought that he was the only Transformer left alive . . . except for Megatron. That was pretty damn cool when I was nine or so.

Oh, and Soundwave wasn't the only tape deck; there was also Blaster, who was more of a boom-box and was sort of like the Flava Flav of the Autobots. Soundwave, of course, was a Decepticon.

Transformers was the best, but I know this film will suck.
The article linked dosent mention which transformers its going to be based on, they've been re-designed for each series : Transformers, Armada, Energon (Well actually Energon was the same as the original except all CGI), Beast Wars and probably again for the new Cybertron one.
Hopefully it will be the original.

Soundwave is a helicopter??
Well I suppose a 40ft robot turning into a little radio is a little hard to swallow......I guess that means his little robot friends are gone too? I hope they keep the vocal effect though.
I loved Starscream and the grumpy old ambulance autobot who's name I cant remember.

"Autobots, Roll Out!"

Don't worry, they are basing the characters (more or less, I suppose) on the original designs and personalities of the '80s Transformers. We know that at least Optimus, Megatron, Soundwave, Shockwave and Starscream are going to be around, and one can assume that many more will be present, as well. I the rationale behind Soundwave being not-a-tape-deck is that, well, there aren't really any tape decks anymore, at least not any without sand in the speakers, missing knobs and battery acid stains on the back. Still, he had better have that "un-chrasimatic" monotone voice, or there will be hell to pay . . .
